Rainfall
NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 119.59 mm during March, well above the historical average of 48.97 mm. This was the second wettest March on record for the state, following 155.31 mm during March 1956. Most of western and southern NSW recorded monthly totals more than three times their historical average, with close to three quarters of the state recording rainfall in the wettest 10% of years. In particular, locations such as Ivanhoe recorded more than seven times the historical average, with the monthly total close to the annual average.
Twenty-five stations recorded their wettest March on record, with an additional 75 experiencing their wettest March since at least 1989. The Murray Darling Basin recorded 92.09 mm, almost three times the March average of 38.55 mm and the fourth wettest on record, but slightly drier than March 2010 (95.54 mm). In comparison, rain was below average in the far northeast of the state, with some regions recording less than half their March average.
Most of the rain fell during the first week of the month as a low pressure trough brought very heavy rain across the state. Most of NSW recorded at least 50 mm between the 1st and 5th of the month, with large areas recording more than 150 mm, with a 5-day total of 97.94 mm averaged across the state. This event broke daily records at 23 locations, but was particularly important in terms of accumulated totals, leading to widespread major flooding in NSW. This event is discussed in greater detail in Special Climate Statement 39.
A short-lived East Coast Low brought further heavy rain to the south coast on the 8th and 9th, with daily totals as high as 134.4 mm at Lucas Heights on the 8th and as much as 40 mm in one hour at Sydney Observatory Hill, resulting in widespread flooding in the Metropolitan region. Conditions were generally dry for the rest of March, with further falls in inland NSW on the 16th and 17th but rain otherwise generally light and coastal.
Some sites had their highest total March rainfall on record. Some sites had their highest March daily rainfall on record. See a map of rainfall deciles.Temperature
The average maximum temperature for NSW during March was 26.6 °C, 2.0 °C below the historical average. This is the 4th coldest March on record for NSW, and the coldest March since 1994. Most of the state was below average, with more than 80% of the state experiencing temperatures in the coldest 10% of years, associated with the very high rainfall and cloud cover during the month. Temperatures were particularly cool in the southwest where rain was heaviest, with most of this area more than 3 °C below average. Ten stations including Cooma and Griffiths recorded their coldest March on record, while an additional 19 were the coldest in at least two decades. Temperatures were generally mild to cold for most of the month, with particularly cold temperatures associated with the rain event between the 1st and 3rd, while most of the state was more than 6 °C below average on the 24th and 25th.
The average minimum temperature during March was 14.3 °C, 0.9 °C below the historical average and the coolest March since 2005. Most of the state was within 1 °C of average during the month, with coolest conditions in the west, including the coldest March nights since 1987 at Tibooburra. The mean temperature for March was consequently 20.5 °C, 1.4 °C below the historical average and the 6th coldest on record, as well as the coolest March since 1994.
Some sites had their coldest March day (lowest maximum temperature) on record. Some sites had their lowest March mean daily maximum temperature on record. Some sites had their warmest March night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.
See a map of maximum temperature anomalies. See a map of minimum temperature anomalies.
Other phenomena
Flooding in NSW was widespread and severe during March, with more than 75% of the state affected by Flood Warnings at the beginning of the month. The most significant flooding was in southern NSW throughout the month as a result of the heavy rains in early March, particularly along the Lachlan and Murrumbidgee systems. Several major towns along these rivers including Wagga Wagga recorded their most severe flood since 1974. Tens of thousands of people were evacuated as floodwaters progressed downstream during the month, with 171 flood rescues performed by the SES. Several dams also reached full capacity during this event including Warragamba, resulting in minor flooding in parts of western Sydney.
Meanwhile, floodwaters continued to progress through the Darling system in northwest NSW during the month, including major flooding in the Bourke region. A short-lived East Coast Low on the 8th also brought flash flooding to the Metropolitan region and along the south coast, with parts of Bega evacuated as the further rain exacerbated existing flooding.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 2 April 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
