NSW in April 2012: A dry month west of the divide

Rainfall
NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 23.9 mm during April, well below the historical average of 46.7 mm and the driest April since 2006. This is the first month with below average rainfall in NSW since October 2011, following the breakdown of the 2011-12 La Niña event during March, and is the largest negative anomaly for any month since August 2009. The Murray-Darling Basin also recorded just 14.2 mm during April (average 38.1 mm), the driest April since 2008 and the strongest negative anomaly for any month since January 2009.
Most of NSW west of the divide recorded below average rainfall during April, with large parts of the northwest recording less than 1 mm during the month. Several stations including Broken Hill Airport and Cobar recorded no rainfall at all during the month, equaling their previous rainfall record, with large areas in the driest 10% of years. In contrast, the eastern seaboard and parts of the northeastern border experienced generally above average rainfall during the month, including the wettest April since 1990 at Bankstown and Glenorie in Sydney and since 1989 at Tweed Heads.
Most of the rain fell along the east coast between the 17th and 20th, as a coastal low pressure trough produced widespread heavy rain along the coast. Falls were highest in the metropolitan region and central coast, reaching 112 mm at Wyong on the 18th and 104 mm at Gosford on the 19th. Large areas reported multi-day totals above 150 mm, including 196.4 mm over 48 hours at Gosford, with widespread flash flooding including 16 flood rescues. The far northeast of the state also recorded heavy rainfall associated with a coastal low at the end of the month, with falls as high as 170.2 mm at Tweed Heads on the 29th.

The average maximum temperature in NSW during April was 24.4 °C, 0.3 °C above the historical average and the first warm month since November 2011. Most of the state experienced average to above average temperatures, particularly in the west, associated with generally dry, clear conditions during the month. Temperatures were warmest at the start of the month, with most of NSW more than 4 °C above average between the 1st and the 6th, particularly in the northwest, breaking daily records at some locations.
The average minimum temperature in NSW during April was 10.5 °C, 0.6 °C below the historical average. Nights were generally above average in eastern NSW and below average west of the divide, consistent with the pattern of rainfall anomalies during the month. Nights were also warm at the start of the month, including the warmest night on record at Tidbinbilla on the 6th, while a cold snap on the 10th and 11th was the earliest for April since 1994 at Sydney Observatory Hill. The mean temperature during April was consequently 17.5 °C, 0.1 °C below the historical average.

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Tuesday 1 May 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
