NSW in May 2012: Dry days and cold nights in NSW

Rainfall
NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 20.3 mm during May, well below the historical average of 47.1 mm and the driest May since 2008. Western NSW was particularly dry during the month, with no rain at all in areas including Menindee and Broken Hill. Conditions were also very dry east of the Great Dividing Range, with parts of the Hunter Valley experiencing their driest May on record. In contrast, rainfall was close to average in eastern NSW west of the divide, although only small areas were above average. These regions experienced light rain on the 2nd and 3rd as a front crossed the state, with widespread totals of 25-50 mm associated with a surface low pressure trough later in the month, reaching 60 mm at Dubbo on the 25th.

The average maximum temperature across NSW during May was 20.0 °C, 0.6 °C above the historical average, associated with generally clear, dry conditions during the month. Days were generally above average across the state, with warmest conditions in the west and cooler conditions in the southeast. Temperatures were particularly warm between the 8th and 11th with much of the state more than 6 °C above normal, including the warmest day on record at Wanaaring.
The average minimum temperature during May was 5.0 °C, 2.5 °C below the historical average. This is the 3rd coldest May for minimum temperatures since records began in 1950, and the coolest since 2006. Nights were colder than average across the state, associated with generally clear conditions during the month, with particularly cool nights in central NSW. Several stations broke records for average minimum temperatures during the month, including Grenfell and Bathurst with more than 90 years of record.
The mean temperature for NSW was consequently 0.9 °C below average at 12.5 °C, warmer than May 2011 (12.1 °C) but the 13th coldest on record.

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Friday 1 June 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
