NSW in August 2012: Dry, sunny August brings warm days and cold nights

10th driest August on record
NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 12.7 mm during August, well below the historical average of 37.8 mm and the 10th driest August on record. August was particularly dry in northern NSW, with a strong high pressure ridge resulting in little to no rainfall in the northern parts of NSW. Several stations including Grafton and Tibooburra recorded no rain at all during the month, their equal driest August on record.
In comparison, the passage of a cold front on the 17th and 18th brought rain to southern parts of the state, while a low pressure trough and widespread thunderstorms brought widespread rain along the tablelands on the 23rd. A low pressure system also produced rain along the central coast on the 10th and 11th, with falls of up to 70 mm at Comboyne on the 11th. In these regions, August rainfall remained well below average, but generally less dry than August 2009 and 2006. However, the south coast also missed out on rain from cold fronts, with the driest August since 1946 at Robertson.
The Murray-Darling Basin also recorded an average of 16.6 mm of rain during August, well below the historical average of 37.8 mm and the driest August since 2009 (15.1 mm).

The statewide average maximum temperature for NSW during August was 18.3 °C, 1.2 °C above the historical average and the 15th warmest on record. Most of the state was warmer than average during the month, with warmest temperatures in the north of the state, associated with a strong high pressure ridge, dry weather, and generally clear, sunny conditions.
The statewide average minimum temperature was just 3.7 °C, 1 °C below average and the 7th coolest on record. The cold nights were also associated with the clear conditions, with temperatures below average across the state, in addition to an increased frequency of cool southerly winds. Nights were particularly cold in central and northern NSW, which were more than 2 °C below average, with several stations recording their coldest August nights on record.
The warmest event during the month occurred ahead of a low pressure trough on the 22nd and 23rd, with warm northwesterly winds bringing temperatures of up to 32.3 °C at Wanaaring on the 22nd. Williamtown recorded 30.5 °C on the 23rd, its warmest August day since records began in 1950, with the warmest August night on record at Coonabarabran (14.1 °C). The coldest nights were at the start of the month, with much of the state more than 6 °C below normal during a period of clear conditions and southerly winds on the 1st and 2nd, including the coldest August night on record at Nyngan and Corowa.
The statewide average temperature in NSW was consequently 11 °C, 0.1 °C above the historical average. Due to the cold nights and warm days the diurnal temperature range was 2.3 °C above normal and the 7th highest on record, the highest since the very dry Augusts of 2006 and 2002.

There were several strong wind events during the month which caused roof damage and downed trees in the state, particularly on the coast. A low pressure system off the coast caused winds of up to 106 km/hr at Sydney Airport on the 10th of August. Gusts reached 111 km/hr at Murrurrundi Gap as a front crossed the state on the 17th, while gusts reached 91 km/hr at Bellambi as widespread thunderstorms hit the state on August 23rd. A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Monday 3 September 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
