NSW in October 2012: A month of extremes for NSW

  • Driest October since 2006
  • Above average maximum temperatures
  • 4th coldest October on record for minimum temperatures
  • East Coast Low brings rain, cold, wind and snow for NSW

Rainfall - Driest October since 2006

NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 15.3 mm during October, well below the historical average of 44.4 mm. This is the 10th driest October on record for NSW and the driest since 2006. The dry conditions were associated with a strong subtropical ridge that limited the impacts of troughs and fronts, and the positive Indian Ocean Dipole event that has affected NSW rainfall during recent months.

Most of the state recorded less than half the average rainfall, with above average falls only recorded on the south coast and parts of the southern border. The month was particularly dry in parts of northeast NSW, including the driest October on record in long-record stations such as Gunnedah and Dungog, while coastal stations including Coffs Harbour, Kempsey and Newcastle experienced their driest October since the 1980s.

The only major rain event during the month occurred between the 11th and 13th as a complex surface trough system brought rain and snow to parts of eastern NSW. An East Coast Low developed off the south coast on the 12th, producing locally very heavy falls of up to 233 mm at Ulladulla and 169.8 mm at Batemans Bay, the wettest October day in at least twenty years.

Temperature - Warm days and cold nights

The statewide average maximum temperature during October was 26.2 °C, 1.7 °C above the historical average. This is the 12th warmest October on record, and the warmest since 2008. Most of the state recorded temperatures at least 1 °C above normal, associated with generally dry, sunny conditions during the month, with cooler than normal temperatures in parts of the south coast. Temperatures were warmest in western NSW, with the warmest October since 1988 in Broken Hill.

Temperatures were particularly warm on the 19th and 20th, with temperatures above 40 °C recorded in parts of northern NSW. Wanaaring broke its previous October temperature record on two consecutive days, while temperatures reached 41.6 °C at Evans Head on the north coast. In contrast, temperatures were very cold due to a trough and East Coast Low on the 11th, including the coldest october day in more than 50 years of record at Wilcannia.

The statewide average minimum temperature was 9.4 °C, 1.1 °C below the historical average. This was the 7th coldest on record for NSW and the coldest since 2003, associated with generally clear conditions and a particularly cold event in the middle of the month. Most of the state was at least 1 °C below normal, with half of the state recording temperatures in the coolest 10% of years and 25 stations experiencing their coldest October since at least the 1980s. Nights were particularly cold at the start of the month, with the coldest October night on record at Hillston and Griffith on the 1st.

The statewide average temperature was consequently 17.8 °C, 0.3 °C above the historical average.

See a list of October temperature records.

Other phenomena - Snow and strong winds

An East Coast Low off the south coast and upper cold pool between the 11th and 13th brought very cold conditions to much of the state, with snow falling on much of the Great Dividing Range including Goulburn, Blackheath and Guyra, stranding motorists in parts of the Blue Mountains. Wind gusts reached 106 km/hr at Wattamolla and 98 km/hr at Jervis Bay on the 12th, with minor damage from downed trees, while localised heavy rain exceeded 200 mm near Ulladulla.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Thursday 1 November 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
