NSW in February 2013: Wet, mild end to summer

Rainfall
NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 64.8 mm during February, above the historical average of 50.7 mm but the driest February since 2007, following heavy falls in recent years. Rainfall was above average in southern NSW and along the coastal strip, but below average in parts of northern inland NSW. The Murray-Darling Basin recorded 35 mm of rain during February, below the historical average of 40.4 mm.
A surface trough and thunderstorm activity on the 1st produced widespread rainfall in coastal NSW, with totals of up to 70.2 mm at Hunter Springs to 9am on the 2nd, with further thunderstorms producing rain in eastern NSW between the 10th and 12th and in parts of the west on the 14th and 15th. A surface trough also produced rain in southern NSW at the end of the month, with totals of up to 115 mm at Thredbo on the 28th, its wettest February day on record, breaking a long dry spell in this region. Griffith Airport was on track to record its driest summer on record with just 13.2 mm to February 27, before experiencing its wettest February day on record with 44 mm on the 28th.
The most significant rain event of the month occurred between the 22nd and 24th, as an East Coast Low produced heavy rain across much of coastal NSW. Daily falls reached 415.2 mm at Yarras on the 23rd, its wettest day on record for any month, with a 3-day total of over 500 mm, while falls reached 185 mm at Robertson on the 24th. This rain fell on already wet catchments following heavy rain in late January, and was associated with minor to major flooding across the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast and Hunter regions.

The statewide average maximum temperature during February was 31.6 °C, 0.2 °C above the historical average. Temperatures varied substantially across the state, however, with temperatures more than 1 °C below normal across much of northeast NSW, where rain and cloud cover was high, including the coldest February on record at Murwillumbah. In comparison, February was more than 1 °C warmer than average across much of western and southern NSW where conditions were drier, with this areas experiencing widespread warmth between the 7th and 10th.
The average minimum temperature for NSW was 18.1 °C, 0.5 °C above the historical average. Nights were also cooler than normal in northeast NSW and warmer than normal in the southwest, although the variation was smaller, while Lord Howe Island experienced its coolest February in at least 24 years. The mean temperature for NSW was consequently 0.4 °C above normal.

Other phenomena
Thunderstorms affected large areas of the state on the 1st. Strong winds reached 102 km/h at Murrurrundi Gap, with hail reported in the Central Tablelands and heavy rain of up to 38.6 mm in 30 minutes at Dungog. Waterspouts were reported near Cabarita Beach on the 17th and off Sydney beaches on the 19th.
An East Coast Low developed off the coast of southeast Queensland on the 21st and moved southward, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to coastal NSW over subsequent days. Strong winds reached 126 km/hr at Byron Bay on the 22nd and 135 km/h at Sydney Harbour just after midnight on the 24th, with tornadoes causing damage in the Kiama region. The heavy rain caused widespread flooding in coastal NSW, including major flooding at Kempsey.

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 1 pm on Friday 1 March 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
