NSW in June 2013: Wet start to winter

  • Wettest June since 2005
  • Warm nights, close to average maximum temperatures
  • East Coast Low produces heavy rain on the south coast

Rainfall - Wettest June since 2005

New South Wales recorded a statewide average rainfall of 72.1 mm during June, well above the historical average of 38.8 mm and the wettest June since 2005. Rainfall was above average across almost the entire state, with well above average rainfall across much of inland NSW including the wettest June on record at Nyngan and Condobolin. The Murray Darling Basin also recorded 55.4 mm of rainfall (average 33.6 mm), the wettest June since 2005.

Most of the rain fell during three main events. The passage of surface troughs drew moist tropical air into the state during the month, with widespread rain in inland NSW on the 1st and 2nd, the wettest June day on record at several locations including Orange and Condobolin. This was followed by a second trough with associated thunderstorm activity, with widespread rain on the 12th and 13th.

The final event emerged from the 24th, as an East Coast Low developed in a coastal surface trough, producing widespread heavy rain in southeast NSW. Totals for the three days to 9am on the 26th reached 336.2 mm at Robertson, with peak daily totals of 126.4 mm at Norah Head on the 24th, 159 mm at Nowra on the 25th, and 168 mm at Robertson on the 26th, although few daily rainfall records were broken. This was followed by persistent coastal rainfall during the remainder of the month, including heavy falls on the 29th and 30th, with two-day totals reaching 156.2 mm at Collaroy in eastern Sydney.

Temperature - Cloudy conditions bring warm nights

The statewide average maximum temperature during June was 16.4 °C, 0.3 °C above the historical average. Temperatures were generally within 1 °C of average across the state, associated with the above average rainfall and cloudiness during the month.

The average minimum temperature was 6.1 °C, 1.5 °C above the historical average and the warmest since 2009. The warm nights were associated with generally above average rainfall and cloudiness during the month, with most of the state recording temperatures at least 1 °C above average, coolest in the south. Nights were particularly warm as a surface troughs crossed the state at the start of the month, with several stations recording their warmest night on record on the 1st, with further warm conditions associated with troughs on the 6th-7th and 11th-13th and at the end of the month.

The mean temperature was consequently 11.2 °C, 0.9 °C above the historical average.

Other phenomena

An East Coast Low caused heavy rain on the south and central coasts between the 24th and 26th, causing minor to moderate flooding in some areas, in addition to wind gusts of up to 100 km/h at Cabramurra on the 25th. This was followed by further localised flooding during heavy coastal rain on the 29th and 30th, in addition to downed trees.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 1 July 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
