Rainfall - Wettest month since 2007

Sydney Observatory Hill recorded 316.4 mm of rain during June, more than double the historical average of 131.2 mm. This is the wettest month in Sydney since 510.6 mm was recorded in June 2007, with well above average rainfall recorded across the city. The rain fell over fifteen days, close to the June average of 12-13 days, but nine recorded at least 10 mm of rain (average 3-4 days) and three recorded at least 50 mm (average 0-1 days), in both cases the most since 2007.

The month started with an inland surface trough generating widespread showers, with a two-day total to 9am on the 3rd of 49.2 mm at Observatory Hill and 66.4 mm at Dover Heights. The middle of the month was generally dry, with heaviest mid-month falls reaching 12.8 mm at Wahroonga on the 13th due to a surface trough and thunderstorms, while localised showers caused falls of up to 26.8 mm at Dover Heights on the 19th.

Most of the rain fell during the final week of the month, with an eight-day total to the 30th of 239.8 mm at Sydney Observatory Hill and up to 268.4 mm at the Botanic Gardens. A surface trough and East Coast Low caused two consecutive days above 50 mm on the 23rd and 24th, with a two-day total of 109.6 mm. Across the Sydney metropolitan region, daily totals reached 95.4 mm at Avalon Beach on the 24th, its wettest June day on record.

This was followed by several days of moist onshore flow which generated persistent coastal showers, with heavier falls re-emerging at the end of the month as a coastal surface trough developed. Two-day totals to the 30th reached 156.2 mm at Collaroy, with daily falls reaching 82.8 mm at Collaroy on the 30th and 84.2 mm at Mona Vale on the 30th. The combination of these heavy rain events caused minor damage in the city as well as the spilling of Warragamba Dam.

Temperature - Warm June despite rain and clouds

Sydney Observatory Hill recorded an average maximum temperature of 18.1 °C during June, 1.2 °C above the historical average, with temperatures closer to average in western Sydney. Days were generally warm during the first half of the month, with seven days reaching at least 20 °C, the most since 2005 (average 3 days).

Only four days dropped below 15 °C during the month (average 6 days), with three consecutive days below 14 °C on the 22nd-24th as an East Coast Low brought heavy rain and cool southerly winds. This is the longest such cool spell for any month since 19-22 July 1982, although such spells occurred frequently during the first half of the 20th century, with a record 28 days below 14 °C on 18 June - 15 July 1901.

The average minimum temperature was 10.8 °C, 1.5 °C above the historical average, with well above average minimum temperatures across the city. No nights exceeded 15 °C or dropped below 5 °C during the month, with the coolest nights dropping to 7.7 °C and 7.6 °C on the 22nd and 23rd during the East Coast Low and the warmest night reaching 14.9 °C on the 7th. The mean temperature for June was consequently 14.5 °C, 1.3 °C above the historical average and the warmest June since 2008.

Other phenomena

Sydney Airport recorded an average of just 4.0 hours of bright sunshine during June, well below the historical average of 6 hours and the least June sunshine since 1989. The prevailing wind direction was southerly, with 47% of 3 pm winds between SSE and SSW, above average for June. There were only two strong wind days during the month, below average for June, with the strongest wind gust reaching 80 km/h on the 2nd.

Most values are the precipitation in the 24 hours to 9 am on the day indicated. Days marked with »» are part of a longer accumulation, which is marked like this on the final day. Values over 100 mm have been rounded to the nearest whole millimetre. Days marked with - have a rainfall report of zero; days left blank have no rainfall report (which often indicates no rain fell).
This table is very wide; you may have to scroll sideways to see all the days, and you may need to set the paper to 'landscape' to print.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Sydney using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 1 July 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
