NSW in July 2013: Warmest July for twenty years

  • Below average rainfall, driest in the east and far northwest
  • Third warmest July on record, warmest since 1993
  • Record warm spell for minimum temperatures

Rainfall

NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 27.1 mm during July, below the historical average of 39.4 mm. Rainfall was generally close to average in inland NSW but below average in the far northwest and east of the divide, associated with anomalously northwesterly wind patterns and well above average pressure during the month. The Murray Darling Basin recorded 32.7 mm of rain, slightly below the historical average of 39.7 mm.

Conditions were generally dry for much of the month, with the exception of locally heavy rain on the north coast over the 1st and 2nd, with two-day totals reaching 157 mm at Nashua. Most of the rain fell in inland NSW between the 15th and 20th, associated with the progression of two surface troughs and associated thunderstorms. Heaviest falls were recorded in the alpine regions, with a six-day total of 173.9 mm at Thredbo Village, only part of which fell as snow.

Temperature

The statewide average temperature in NSW during July was 1.9 °C above average, the third warmest July since records began in 1910 and the warmest since 1993. Temperatures were well above average across the state, both day and night, associated with prevailing northwesterly winds, dry and clear conditions, with a particularly warm spell during the middle of the month.

The statewide average maximum temperature was 2.1 °C above average, the third warmest on record and the warmest July since 2002. Temperatures were more than 1 °C above average across most of the state, with 87% of the state recording temperatures in the warmest 10% of years. Records were broken at 17 stations in the east and north, including Sydney, Bathurst and Collarenebri, with a further 14 stations warmer than any year since at least 1993.

The statewide average minimum temperature was 1.7 °C above average and the warmest since 2005, with most of the state recording temperatures at least 1 °C above average including the warmest nights on record at Cobar, Katoomba and Thredbo.

There was a notable lack of cold spells during the month, with mild temperatures prevailing across most of the state. Temperatures were particularly warm between the 14th and 20th, as a stationary high pressure system in the Tasman and two successive surface troughs drew warm northwesterly air into the state.

Minimum temperatures were more than 6 °C above normal across the state during this period, with new records set at twelve sites on the 19th. Maximum temperatures were also well above average, particularly on the 17th and 18th, with three daily records. This period also broke July warm spell records at several locations, including a record 6 nights above 10 °C at Wagga Wagga and, 8 nights above 10 °C at Cobar.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 3 pm on Thursday 1 August 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
