NSW in August 2013: A warm, dry end to winter

  • Tenth-driest August on record
  • Seventh-warmest August mean temperatures on record

Rainfall - Tenth driest August on record

NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 11.5 mm of rainfall during August, well below the historical average of 37.8 mm. This is the tenth-driest August on record for NSW, with almost half the state (43 %) recording rainfall in the lowest 10% of years and more than 98% of the state below average. Conditions were driest in the north of the state and along the coastal strip, most of which recorded less than 10 mm of rain during the month, associated with westerly wind anomalies and clear conditions.

The only area of NSW with above average rainfall was in the alpine region, which received several rain events during the month, much of which fell as snow. The Murray-Darling Basin recorded 18.0 mm of rain during the month, half the historical average of 37.8 mm but slightly wetter than August 2012 (17.3 mm), reflecting closer to normal rainfall in Victoria.

Some sites had their lowest total August rainfall on record.

Temperature - Warm days in the north and east

The statewide average maximum temperature during August was 2.5 °C above the historical average, the eight-warmest August on record. Temperatures were above average across the state associated with prevailing westerly windflow, with warmest conditions in northern NSW where rainfall was lower. The warm August contributed to NSW recording both its warmest start to a year (January-August) on record (+1.40 °C), as well as the warmest September-August (12 month) period (+1.66 °C).

Particularly warm spells affected the north of the state from 11-12 August and most of the state at the end of the month, with widespread temperatures more than 6 °C above normal as northerly winds directed warm air from inland Australia into the state. Wanaaring recorded three consecutive days above 30 °C between 27-29 August, the second longest warm spell on record following 23-26 August 1995, including its warmest August day on record with 34.1 °C on the 29th.

The statewide average minimum temperature was 0.7 °C above the historical average, with generally cooler than normal temperatures in the north and warmer nights in the south, also related to the patterns of rain and cloud cover. The mean temperature was consequently 1.6 °C above normal, the seventh-warmest August on record for NSW.

Other phenomena

A vigorous cold front caused strong winds across much of southeast NSW on the 12th, with gusts exceeding 90 km/h from Green Cape to Sydney, reaching 120 km/h at Cabramurra. The strong winds caused some blackouts in addition to downed trees and roof damage.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Monday 2 September 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
