NSW in September 2013: Warmest September on record

  • Warmest September on record
  • Heavy rainfall in southeast NSW on the 17th.
  • Strong winds and early-season bushfires

Rainfall - Heavy September rain in the southeast

NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 27.6 mm during September, below the historical average of 34.7 mm. Rainfall anomalies during the month were patchy, with below average rainfall in the southwest and the north coast, but above average falls in parts of central and southeast NSW. The month was generally dominated by clear, dry conditions, with only one significant rain event mid-month.

Most of the rain fell on the 17th of September, as a complex surface trough crossed the state. This event produced widespread daily falls above 25 mm in the eastern half of the state, with falls exceeding 100 mm in parts of southeast NSW including 220.4 mm at Robertson. This broke daily rainfall records at 14 stations in the southeast, and contributed to record monthly totals at Bega, Robertson and Queanbeyan.

Temperature - Warmest September on record

September 2013 was the warmest on record for NSW. The statewide mean daily temperature was 3.4 °C above the historical average and 0.9 °C above the previous September record (set in 1965). September was the warmest on record for close to 75% of the state and 63 stations, with 100-year stations such as Broken Hill and Wilcannia more than 1 °C warmer than their previous record; all other areas of the state recorded temperatures in the warmest 10% of years.

The statewide mean maximum temperature during September was 4.7 °C above the historical average and 1.3 °C warmer than the previous record, set in 1928. Temperatures were more than 3 °C above normal across the state, with temperatures more than 5 °C warmer than average across much of the northwest.

Warm temperatures persisted throughout the month, with several sustained warm spells associated with clear conditions and warm northwesterly winds. Most of the state recorded temperatures more than 6 °C above normal between the 1st and 10th of the month, with Wilcannia recording a record 9 consecutive days above 30 °C, the equal-longest on record with 20-28 September 2000.

Widespread temperatures more than 6 °C above normal were again recorded between the 22nd and 30th, with a record three consecutive days above 35 °C at Mungindi between the 24th and 26th, while ten stations in the northeast recorded their warmest September day on record on the 26th. In total, temperatures reached 30 °C somewhere on the state on 25 days of the month, with the only cool day associated with rain mid-month.

Minimum temperatures were also well above average during the month, with NSW 2.2 °C above the historical average and the third-warmest on record. Minimum temperatures were warmer than average across the state, particularly in the west and parts of the coastal strip; nineteen stations recorded their warmest September on record.

January-September 2013 is the warmest start to a year on record for NSW mean temperatures, 1.36 °C above the historical average and 0.2 °C above the previous record (2007).

Other phenomena

A cool change generated strong winds in southeast NSW on the 26th, with gusts greater than 90 km/h at 15 stations in the southeast, reaching 119 km/h at Green Cape. This resulted in felled trees and some roof damage, with 642 calls to the SES.

The warm, dry weather and strong winds contributed to significant early-season bushfire activity, particularly along the coastal strip. Fires were particularly prevalent on the 10th and 26th, with two homes destroyed in western Sydney on the 10th while several homes in northeast NSW were threatened and the M1 Motorway closed near Taree due to fires on the 26th.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 14 October 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
