NSW in November 2013: Severe thunderstorms in eastern NSW

  • Well above average rainfall on the coast; dry prevails inland
  • Warm days, cool nights
  • Thunderstorms and tornadoes

Rainfall - Wet in the east, dry in the west

NSW recorded 40.1 mm of rain during November, slightly below the historical average of 44.9 mm. Rainfall was well above average along the coastal strip, particularly in Sydney and the Central Coast. Several stations in this region experienced their wettest November on record, including Newcastle and Paterson, with many other stations, including Sydney Observatory Hill, wettest since at least 1984.

In contrast, rainfall was well below average across most of western NSW, with a number of stations including Cobar and Wagga Wagga recording their driest November since at least 1982. The Murray Darling Basin recorded 25.3 mm of rain, well below the historical average of 40.2 mm and the driest November since 2002.

Most of the rain during the month was associated with a series of complex surface troughs and associated thunderstorm activity during the month, with significant coastal rain events during the periods 11-12, 16-19, 23-24, and 30 November.

Particularly heavy rain was recorded in the Hunter Valley on the 18th associated with a localised low pressure system, with daily totals of up to 214.6 mm at Paterson and several November daily rainfall records, causing moderate flooding on the Paterson and Williams Rivers. Records were also broken on the south coast associated with a localised low on the 12th, while severe thunderstorms in the northeast broke daily rainfall records at Bundarra on the 23rd.

Temperature - Warm days, cool nights

The statewide average maximum temperature was 1.1 °C above the historical average, with warmest conditions in northern and central NSW. While there were some warm days during the month, particularly ahead of surface troughs on 2-3, 7-9, 20-21 and 27-28 November, temperatures were closer to normal than recent months associated with a return to average cloudiness and easterly windflow.

The statewide average minimum temperature was 0.5 °C below the historical average, the coldest November since 1999. Nights were below average across most of the state, particularly in central NSW and the Riverina, with the coldest November on record at Tocumwal. Nights were coolest at the start of the month, with widespread cool conditions on the 4th-6th and 10th-14th. The statewide mean temperature was consequently 0.3 °C above the historical average.

Severe thunderstorms

The combination of moist easterly winds and a series of surface troughs triggered numerous thunderstorms in eastern NSW during November. Thunderstorms occurred in the northeast on most days between 11-18 November, with storms across much of eastern NSW between the 21st-23rd, many of which were associated with strong winds, short-lived heavy rain, and reports of hail. Storms include:

  • 10th - 4 cm hail at Casino, drifts of small hail at Dorrigo.
  • 11th - 2 cm hail near Narrabri, with reports of roof damage from hail in Bellingen and Bowral
  • 12th - 2 cm hail in Richmond
  • 13th - 3 cm hail in Nambucca Heads
  • 14th - 4 cm hail south of Alstonville; flash flooding near Yamba
  • 16th - 2-3 cm hail in Tabulam and South West Rocks; 4 cm hail in Coffs Harbour, Kyogle and Manilla; 6 cm hail in Bellingen and Theresa Creek.
  • 18th - 2 cm hail in Kyogle, 8-10 cm drifts of small hail in Dorrigo, several waterspouts off the coast of Port Macquarie as well as in Manly, and an EF1 tornado in Hornsby (northern Sydney) damaged a shopping centre, train station, TAFE and numerous cars, as well as causing minor injuries.
  • 21st - 5 cm hail near Eaglehawk
  • 23rd - A tornado tore the roof off a house in Tenterden, near Guyra in northern NSW.
  • 25th - 2 cm hail covered backyards in Taree

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Monday 2 December 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
