New South Wales in March 2020: cool and wet

New South Wales was cool and wet in March 2020. Daytime temperatures were below to very much below average across the State. Rainfall was above average over most of the State west of the Dividing Range, but below average in the northeast and around Broken Hill in the west.

Above average rainfall in the west

  • Most of the State west of the Dividing Range, except for around Broken Hill, had above average rainfall for the month. Much of this fell on the 4th and 5th as an inland trough drew in tropical moisture from Ex-Tropical Cyclone Esther
  • The region recorded 50–150 mm from this event, with the highest total of 136.1 mm at Jingellic on the Murray River on the 5th
  • Fowlers Gap AWS in the far west of the State recorded 120.8 mm on the 4th. More rain fell in 6 hours than in 2018 and 2019 combined
  • Several sites had their highest March daily rainfall on record or their highest total March rainfall for at least 20 years
  • January–March 2020 totals for many towns in the State's west have been around twice as much as for the same period in 2019
  • Monthly rainfall was close to average along most of the coast, but below average in the northeast of the State

Cool conditions across the State

  • Daytime temperatures were below to very much below average across New South Wales in March 2020
  • Across the State, March maximum temperatures were 1.19 °C below the long-term average, the coolest March since 2012
  • February and March 2020 are the first consecutive months of below average maximum temperatures for New South Wales since September and October 2016
  • However, it was a warm start to the month, with maximum temperatures in the high 30s across much of the State on the 1st and 2nd. The State's highest temperature for March was 39.6 °C at Sydney Airport on the 2nd
  • The passage of a southerly airstream on the 14th saw a number of sites in the Sydney basin recording their coldest March day on record
  • Several sites with less than 30 years of data had their lowest March mean daily maximum temperature on record and several others had their lowest March mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years
  • Night-time temperatures were close to average across the State. After several warm years March minimum temperatures were the coolest since 2015

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 1 April 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
