New South Wales in June 2020: Warm days, dry conditions

Daytime temperatures in June were above average over most of the State. Rainfall was generally below average, particularly in the far west, continuing a run of dry June conditions that started in 2017. Clear skies meant that minimum temperatures were below average over inland regions.

Below average rainfall

  • June rainfall was generally below average across New South Wales, and very much below average in the far west
  • For the state as a whole June rainfall was 25.1 mm, around 35% below the long-term average and in the lowest 30% (decile 3) of all years since 1900
  • It was the fourth consecutive June of decile 3 or lower statewide rainfall, a run not previously seen in the observed record
  • Rainfall was above average in parts of the Central Western Slopes District
  • A low pressure trough brought heavy rainfall to the northeast coast on 10th, with the State's highest daily total for the month of 76.0 mm at Old Bar (Ondarro Crest)
  • With above average rainfall in the early part of the year, the statewide January to June total of around 339 mm is the highest since 2016

Warm daytime temperatures

  • Mean maximum temperatures for New South Wales were generally above average for June
  • The statewide average maximum temperature was 0.87 °C above the long-term average, slightly cooler than 2019
  • Conditions were dominated by a succession of high pressure systems, with few outbreaks of cold air
  • A low pressure system brought cold conditions to the south on the 7th, with two sites in the Riverina recording their coldest June day on record
  • The clear skies and dry conditions resulted in below average minimum temperatures over inland regions, and Wanaaring Post Office recorded its lowest June mean daily minimum temperature on record
  • Maximum temperatures for January to June are around 0.18 °C above average, the coolest start to the year since 2012

Snow in alpine regions

  • Snow falls were reported for the Barrington Tops on the 2nd
  • A frontal system brought snow to alpine regions from the 20th to the 23rd, however snow depth at many locations is tracking below average for this time of year

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Wednesday 1 July 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
