New South Wales in November 2022: very cool and wet

November was very cool across New South Wales. Days are nights were the coolest since 1999, with the November mean maximum temperature the equal second-lowest on record since 1910. Heavy rain at times resulted in renewed rises in river levels in already-flooded inland areas.

Above average rainfall inland

  • Rainfall in November was above average to very much above average (wettest 10% of all Novembers since 1900) for most of the state inland of the Dividing Range.
  • Along the coast, rainfall was generally close to average, but very much below average (driest 10% of all Novembers since 1900) in the Northern Rivers district.
  • For the state overall, total November rainfall was 74.2 mm or 66% above the 1961–1990 average, just outside the 10 wettest Novembers on record.
  • The highest monthly rainfall total was 434.0 mm at Thredbo AWS.
  • Some sites in southern areas, including Thredbo AWS, had their highest total November rainfall on record.
  • A few sites had their highest total November rainfall for at least 20 years.

Very cool across the state

Heavy rain and ongoing flooding

  • There was heavy rain at times over inland areas, which resulted in renewed rises in already-flooded rivers.
  • At the start of the month, a cold front interacted with moist tropical air to bring widespread heavy rain.
  • Some sites around Oberon and Canberra had their highest November daily rainfall on record in the 24 hours to 9am on the 1st.
  • There was renewed major flooding along the Lachlan, Murrumbidgee, Namoi, Barwon and Darling rivers, with evacuations ordered for Forbes and parts of Wagga Wagga.
  • On the 13th, thunderstorms in a cloudband affected much of the Central West district.
  • Many sites in the Central West had their highest November daily rainfall on record in the 24 hours to 9am on the 14th.
  • Forbes Airport AWS recorded 110.2 mm of rain in 6 hours on the 13th, and the daily total of 118.0 mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 14th was a record for any month around Forbes, with observations starting in 1875.
  • The storms caused flash flooding across the Central West; in Eugowra, two people died and at least 225 homes were damaged, along with many businesses.
  • Subject to data arriving later, the 14th is provisionally the wettest day in November on record for New South Wales since 1900, with the estimated area-average daily rainfall of 22.04 mm slightly more than the 22.02 mm estimated for 8 November 1966.
  • The 1st is provisionally the fourth-wettest November day on record, with an estimated area-average daily rainfall of 21.32 mm.
  • Floodwaters continued downstream in the Murray–Darling Basin and, by the end of the month, towns affected by major flooding included Brewarrina, Bourke, Condobolin, Euabalong, Hillston, Hay, Balranald, and Wentworth.
  • A Special Climate Statement on the ongoing floods is being prepared and will be published in due course.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, usually published in the first week of the following month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 6 pm on Friday 2 December 2022. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.

Information about Australian Indigenous seasonal calendars is available at the Indigenous Weather Knowledge website.
