Monday, 4 June 2007 - Monthly Climate Summary for Northern Territory - Product code IDCKGC12R0
The Territory recorded its second hottest May on record this year, with the average maximum temperature of 30.2°CC more than two degrees above the long-term mean. The hottest May was recorded in 1958. During a particularly hot spell early in the month, we also recorded our hottest ever May temperature of 38.6°CC at two separate locations (Timber Creek and Daly Waters) on two separate days (4th and 5th respectively). Numerous stations recorded their hottest May on Record, several of these breaking the previous mark more than once. For instance at Yuendumu, where the previous May record of 33.0°CC was broken on seven of the first eight days of the month (peaking at 34.8°CC on the 4th), whilst Tennant Creek exceeded its previous hottest May day on three consecutive days. Night-time was also relatively warm over the Territory, with the fourth highest area-averaged minimum temperature on record, which was also more than 2°CC warmer than the long-term mean. Several stations recorded their hottest May-averaged minimum on record.
Darwin
Lack of cool days gave Darwin its equal hottest May-average maximum temperature of 33.4°CC, while it was the first May since 1993 that Darwin’s minimum temperature failed to fall below 20°CC at least once during the month. The coolest day had a maximum of 31.6°CC. Not since records began has Darwin had a May without a cooler day.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 3 pm on Monday 4 June 2007. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Means are long-term means based on observations from
all previous available records for that station.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record in that time.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of "normal" rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
normal in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of normal shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
