Friday, 4 January 2008 - Monthly Climate Summary for Northern Territory - Product code IDCKGC12R0
A record hot start across the Territory was experienced in December 2007 however the monthly averages ended up being close to normal. Rainfall across the Territory was also close to normal though the Top End was wetter than average mainly due to the onset of the monsoon around Christmas.
Jump to: Extremes Records Summaries Notes the top
Average to well above average rainfall for the month was recorded over the Top End and to the far northwest. However, the rainfall was average to below average south of the Top End. Some areas in the Alice Springs District reported below normal rain for the month.
Northwesterly trade winds appeared in Darwin on the 27th, marking the onset of the monsoon. Prior to this, the Top End received some good falls due to cloudbands which passed through the area.
Some sites had their highest daily December rainfall on record.
Some sites had their highest total December rainfall on record.
In the first few days of the month a complex weather pattern, including a deep heat-low south of the Top End, contributed to several hottest ever daily temperature records being broken across the Territory.
This hot-spell included Darwin which endured its hottest night for more than 20 years, and its equal hottest night on record. The minimum temperature recorded was 29.7°C with the previous occurrences being on the 25th of November 1987 and the 19th of December 1985.
Despite the hot start, mean maximum temperatures for the month remained within one degree of the long-term mean over the Territory. Some areas in the far southwest recorded more than two degrees below normal.
Also, overall mean minimum temperatures were about normal in the Top End while warmer than normal minimums were recorded in the southern parts of the Territory. Two to three degrees above normal minimums were recorded in the southeast.
Some sites had their highest December temperature on record.
Some sites had their coldest December day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.
Some sites had their warmest December night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.
Some sites had their highest maximum temperature on record for any month.
Some sites had their warmest night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record for any month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 3 pm on Friday 4 January 2008. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
normal in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of normal shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
