MEDIA RELEASE - Thursday, 2 July 2009
Average day time temperatures were greater than normal across almost the entire Northern Territory. In the Top End, most sites recorded zero rainfall, typical for the dry season month, but isolated showers around coastal areas provided significant falls at several sites. Further south in the Alice Springs district, rainfall was about average for the month. June started off cool in the south but by the end of the month the Victoria and Barkly districts were breaking records with their maximum temperatures.
A cloud band at the end of May persisted into the start of June producing some rainfall in the Alice Springs district. Isolated coastal showers occurred around the 23rd in the Darwin-Daly district. Another cloud band covering southern parts of the Northern Territory produced widespread rainfall across the Alice Springs district on the 26th.
The wettest overall was 23.2 mm at Point Fawcett AWS, followed by 15.2 mm at Warruwi AWS, followed by 7.2 mm at Cape Don AWS.
The wettest single day was 22.6 mm at Point Fawcett AWS on the 9th, followed by 15.2 mm at Warruwi AWS on the 22nd, followed by 7.2 mm at Cape Don AWS on the 23rd.
Maximum temperatures in the Alice Springs district were suppressed at the begining of the month, due to a cloud band lingering over from May. However, the only site in the Northern Territory whose average maximum temperature was below its climatological average was Yulara Aero AWS. The warmer then usual days were most pronounced in the Arnhem and Roper-McArthur districts where almost all sites recorded average maximum temperatures of more than one degree higher then normal. Hot northwesterly winds ahead of a cold front at the end of the month produced a string of maximum temperature records around the 30th.
The hottest day was 37.0°C at Kidman Springs on the 30th, followed by 36.1°C at Timber Creek on the 29th, followed by 36.0°C at Bradshaw AWS on the 6th, Ngukurr on the 26th and Kidman Springs on the 29th.
The warmest days on average were 33.7°C at Noonamah AWS, followed by 33.1°C at Jabiru Airport AWS, followed by 32.8°C at Middle Point AWS.
The coolest days on average were 20.4°C at Yulara Aero AWS, followed by 20.5°C at Curtin Springs, followed by 20.6°C at Arltunga.
The coldest day was 10.1°C at Kulgera on the 1st, followed by 10.9°C at Alice Springs Airport on the 1st, followed by 11.5°C at Arltunga on the 2nd.
Some sites had their highest June temperature on record.
Minimum temperatures were mixed across the Northern Territory but most sites recorded minimums within one degree of their long term average.
The coldest night was −0.9°C at Arltunga on the 20th, followed by 0.2°C at Yulara Aero AWS on the 22nd, followed by 0.4°C at Arltunga on the 19th.
The coolest nights on average were 5.1°C at Yulara Aero AWS, followed by 5.2°C at Arltunga and Curtin Springs, followed by 6.1°C at Watarrka.
The warmest nights on average were 23.5°C at Cape Don.
The strongest wind gust was 59 km/h at McCluer Island AWS on the 17th, followed by 57 km/h at McCluer Island AWS on the 18th and Alice Springs Airport on the 30th.
