Alice Springs Airport sees hottest September on record

With a mean daily maximum temperature of 33.1 °C, Alice Springs Airport saw their hottest September on record. The previous record was 30.7 °C set in September 1980. The long-term average is 27.2 °C.

While no daily temperature records were set at Alice Springs this month, Alice Springs did experience it's equal third hottest September day on record with 38.1 °C on the 25th. This was only the fifth time on record that the temperature has risen above 38 °C in September The hottest day on record was 38.8 °C recorded on 22 September 2003 and then again on 22 September 2012.

This month also had 9 days at Alice Springs Airport when the mercury rose above 35 °C. The only other time on record that Alice Springs saw 9 days above 35 °C was in 2003.

Rainfall

When averaged across the NT, September rainfall was only 2.14 mm, which is 4.87 mm (69.5%) below the September mean (7.01 mm). There were a few isolated afternoon thunderstorms that formed over the western Top End this month when places such as Batchelor Aero and Jabiru Airport saw rainfall totals between 20 mm and 30 mm. Batchelor Aero and Point Stuart both had their highest September daily rainfall on record and their highest total September rainfall on record.

The wettest overall for the month was Walker Creek with 43.6 mm, followed by Jabiru Airport with 32.2 mm, and then Daly River Police Station with 30.5 mm. The wettest single day was at Batchelor Aero with 29.0 mm on the 19th, followed by Walker Creek with 28.0 mm on the 22nd, followed by Jabiru Airport with 20.2 mm on the 18th.

Mean Temperature

The mean temperature is the average of the daily maximum and daily minimum temperature. Across the NT this month the average mead daily temperature was 27.05 °C which is 3.41 °C above average (23.64 °C) and the highest on record. The previous highest was 2.72 °C set in September 2005.

The warmest on average was Bradshaw with 31.0 °C, followed by Timber Creek with 29.8 °C, and then Jabiru Airport with 29.6 °C. The coolest on average was Arltunga with 22.1 °C, followed by Yulara Aero with 22.4 °C and then Curtin Springs with 22.7 °C.

Maximum temperature

The Northern Territory has seen its highest September maximum temperatures on record with a Territory average monthly mean daily maximum temperature of 35.32 °C, which is 3.94 °C above normal (31.38 °C), and 1.43 °C above the previous record (33.9 set in September 1997). One of the contributing factors to the high temperatures was that the sub-tropical ridge was positioned further south than usual making it difficult for cold fronts and troughs to move across central Australia. Every location in the Alice Springs, Barkely and Roper-McArthur districts saw their highest September mean daily maximum temperature on record except for Yuendumu which saw their second highest September mean daily maximum temperature on record and Borroloola which saw their third highest. Tennant Creek Airport was among the sites that had their highest September temperature on record. One site, McCluer Island, had their coldest September day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.

Bradshaw saw the three hottest days in the NT this month with 41.3 °C on the 27th, followed by 41.2 °C on the 20th, and then 41.1 °C on the 17th. It is not a surprise then that the warmest days on average were at Bradshaw with an average monthly maximum temperature of 38.5 °C. The next warmest days were at Timber Creek with 38.2 °C, followed by Victoria River Downs with 38.0 °C.

The coolest days on average were at McCluer Island with 29.2 °C, followed by North East Island with 30.6 °C, and then Gove Airport with 31.0 °C. The coolest day was at Kulgera with 23.6 °C on the 18th, followed by Arltunga with 25.3 °C on the 18th, followed by Territory Grape Farm with 25.3 °C on the 28th, and then Kulgera with 25.7 °C on the 16th.

Minimum temperature

With a mean daily minimum temperature of 21.1 °C, Tennant Creek Airport saw their second warmest September on record and their warmest September since the record was set in 1997 (21.4 °C). Jervois and Kulgera were among the sites to have their highest September mean daily minimum temperature on record. When averaged across the NT, this was the second highest September mean daily minimum temperature with 18.79 °C, which is 2.89 °C above normal. The current record is 18.89 °C set in 2005.

The coldest night in the Territory this month was at Yulara Aero with 3.7 °C on the 20th, followed by Arltunga with 5.4 °C on the 7th and again on the 19th, Kulgera also had a with 5.4 °C on the 19th, as did Curtin Springs on the 20th. The coolest nights on average were at Yulara Aero with 11.6 °C, followed by Arltunga with 12.1 °C, and then Curtin Springs with 12.4 °C.

The warmest nights on average were at Cape Don with 24.9 °C, followed by McCluer Island with 24.6 °C,and then Cape Wessel with 23.8 °C. The warmest night was at Victoria River Downs with 27.3 °C on the 22nd.

Wind

The strongest wind gust was at McCluer Island with 72 km/h on the 7th, followed by Alice Springs Airport with 70 km/h on the 15th, Yulara Aero with 70 km/h on the 30th, and then McCluer Island with 69 km/h on the 5th, Yulara Aero with 69 km/h on the 15th, and Yulara Aero also with 69 km/h on the 25th.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Northern Territory using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Tuesday 1 October 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
