Tuesday, 1 November 2016 - Monthly Climate Summary for Northern Territory - Product code IDCKGC12R0
Northern Territory in October 2016: First cooler than average month for 2016
After nine consecutive months of warmer than average mean temperatures across the Northern Territory, October temperatures were more than 1 °C below the long-term average. Territory-wide, near average rainfall was observed during October, however there were areas of the north and east that were much wetter than average, while the south and west tended drier than average.
Cool days and nights
- The mean temperature in the Territory was 1.15 °C below the October average.
- The mean minimum temperature for October was 1.56 °C below average, the ninth lowest on record and lowest in October since 1982.
- The mean maximum temperature for October was 0.76 °C below average.
- Nearly all of the NT south of the Top End had below average temperatures, with a large area in the south experiencing its coolest overnight temperatures on record. Several sites had their lowest October mean daily minimum temperatures on record and some sites had their lowest October temperature on record.
- Most coastal locations across the Top End had warmer than average temperatures and the northeast of the Top End observed very much above average maximum temperatures.
- Lajamanu in the Tanami District had a very hot 24-hour period towards the end of the month, with its record highest October temperature on the thirtieth and warmest October night (highest daily minimum temperature) on the thirty-first.
- An exceptionally cool day occurred over the Top End on the twenty-second as overnight rain and persistent cloud kept maximum temperatures well below average. Some sites had their lowest daily maximum temperature for October.
- Darwin had slightly above average daytime temperatures and slightly below average overnight temperatures; Darwin Airport's maximum temperature of 26.7 °C on the twenty-second was its second lowest October maximum temperature on record, while on the eighth, its maximum of 37.5 °C was its equal-fifth-highest in October and equal-sixth all-time high temperature.
Near average rainfall
- Territory-wide, rainfall was slightly below average (7% less than the long-term October mean).
- Much of the southern half observed below average rainfall.
- In the north, rainfall was generally above average apart from the southwest of the Top End. The northeast of the NT was mostly above average, particularly the northern Barkly District and the eastern Top End.
- Darwin observed a total of 133.8 mm, which was nearly twice the October average of 70.3 mm

Notes
The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Northern Territory using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 1 November 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
