Thursday, 1 December 2016 - Monthly Climate Summary for Northern Territory - Product code IDCKGC12R0
Northern Territory in November 2016: Hot in the north; near average rainfall
Daytime and overnight temperatures were well above average throughout the Territory's Top End in November. Typical for this time of the year, rainfall was variable across the NT during the month, but overall was close to the long-term average.
Highly variable rainfall across the NT
- The northern half observed several days where heavy, isolated falls occurred; some sites had their highest November daily rainfall on record
- Parts of the central Top End, the Tanami and northern Gregory districts had above average falls, and some sites had their highest total November rainfall on record
- Northeast Arnhem and Carpentaria districts had very low rainfall totals during the month, as did parts near the southwest of the Top End and the far southwest of the NT.
- Rainfall at Darwin Airport was almost 50% above average with 211.4 mm; Alice Springs Airport received 6.8 mm which is only 24% of its average November rainfall
- Territory-wide, rainfall for November was 4% below average
- Spring rainfall was generally above average in the southern NT, particularly in the southern Barkly and northern Simpson districts
Hot in the north, cool nights in the south
- Both daytime and overnight temperatures were generally above average in the northern half of the Territory and average to below average in the south
- The northeastern part of the Northern Territory observed maximum temperatures which were well above average; some sites had their highest November temperature on record and their highest November mean daily maximum temperature on record
- A similar pattern was apparent with regard to minimum temperatures with the northern half recording temperatures well above average while some parts of the southern half had well below average overnight temperatures
- Territory-wide, maximum temperatures were 0.6 °C above average and minimum temperatures were 0.06 °C below average
- Temperatures in the southern NT were generally well below average during Spring
Severe thunderstorm season in full swing
- The NT typically has its highest number of severe thunderstorms during November
- The most significant events this November included widespread wind damage to vegetation in the Palmerston and Darwin River Dam regions on the 5th; a dust storm was reported in association with a severe wind gust of 96 km/h recorded at Alice Springs on the 11th, and small hail was reported at Howard Springs on the 16th (not actually a severe thunderstorm, but a rare occurrence)

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Northern Territory using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Thursday 1 December 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
