Northern Territory in February 2017: Wet start to the month before a monsoon break

February saw above average rainfall across the Top End, while the southern half of the Northern Territory experienced drier than average conditions. Both maximum and minimum temperatures were below average through much of the Territory. Tropical cyclone Alfred became the first tropical cyclone to form in the Northern Region in almost two years.

Wet start to the month with active monsoon

  • The month began with monsoonal conditions across the Top End. During this monsoon burst, several sites across the north-western Top End recorded their highest February daily rainfall on record, with daily falls exceeding 200 mm at some locations. On the 5th, Darwin Airport recorded 201.8 mm, its 11th-highest daily total on record.
  • The focus of rainfall shifted to the eastern Carpentaria District from mid-month, with tropical cyclone Alfred forming in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Centre Island and Bing Bong Port had their highest total February rainfall on record, with Centre Island receiving 461.2 mm between the 19th and 21st.
  • Overall, rainfall over the Top End was above average to well above average. After a wet December and January, dry air dominated over the southern half of the Territory, with average to below average rainfall in the south. Territory-wide, rainfall was 17% above average.
  • Darwin recorded just over 600 mm of rain during February, taking the total for this wet season to over 1800 mm; this is above the long-term average for an entire October to April wet season of around 1670 mm.

Cooler than average across much of the Territory

  • Maximum temperatures were below average across the base of the Top End and central parts of the Territory, owing to above average cloud cover and rainfall. Three locations in the Carpentaria District saw their coldest February day (lowest maximum temperature) on record when tropical cyclone Alfred was in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Borroloola also set its lowest February mean daily maximum temperature on record.
  • In the far southeast, maximum temperatures were above average. The second half of the month also saw above average temperatures in the far north after a cool start to the month, as dry air dominated during a monsoon break period. Pirlangimpi Airport saw its highest February temperature on record on the 23rd, and Darwin Airport had its equal 10th hottest February day on record the same day with 34.7 °C.
  • Much of the Territory saw average to below average minimum temperatures, with cooling rainfall in the north and cloud free nights in the south.
  • Overall, the mean maximum temperature in the NT was 0.27 °C below the long-term average, while the mean minimum temperature was 0.51 °C below average.

First tropical cyclone for Northern Region in almost two years

  • Tropical cyclone Alfred formed in the Gulf of Carpentaria on the 20th. It was the first tropical cyclone in the Northern Region since cyclone Nathan in March 2015.
  • Typically, the Northern Territory region experiences two to three tropical cyclones each cyclone season. The tropical cyclone season runs through to the end of April.
  • The heavy rains during the month caused widespread flooding over the Top End with multiple Flood Warnings for minor and moderate flooding issued for the Daly, Katherine, McArthur and Waterhouse rivers.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Northern Territory using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Wednesday 1 March 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
