Tuesday, 2 May 2017 - Monthly Climate Summary for Northern Territory - Product code IDCKGC12R0
Northern Territory in April 2017: a wet month in the northeast and southwest corners; a record cold day in Darwin
April saw above average rainfall in the southwest due to a cloudband, and above average rainfall over the northeastern Top End. On the 11th the Top End experienced a highly unusual cold day. Tropical cyclone Frances formed on the 27th in the Timor Sea, moved southwest and did not make landfall over the Northern Territory.
Above average rainfall in the northeast and southwest corners of the Territory
- The monsoon trough mostly remained over water north of Australia at the beginning of the month, dipping south briefly to affect some of the northern coast
- Northeastern Arnhem Land received above average rainfall, with some locations receiving more than 400 mm during the month and a few sites having their wettest April rainfall for many years
- A tropical low over northwestern Western Australia fed tropical moisture into the southwestern NT in the middle of the month, leading to above average rainfall over the Lasseter District: Walungurru Airport recorded 84.2 mm for April, well above the April average of 15 mm
- Total April rainfall was about 12% above average for the NT
Record cold day in the Top End
- Rain falling into cool, dry southeast winds saw Darwin record a maximum temperature of just 21.9°C on the 11th, its coldest April day on record, well below the previous wet season record of 24.0°C and the third-coldest day for any time of year
- A number of other locations in the wider Darwin area also recorded their coldest April day (lowest maximum temperature) on record during this event
- There were some cold nights inland at the end of the month, with two sites having their lowest April temperature on record
- The Territory's mean daily maximum temperature was 0.43 °C above average, but the mean minimum temperature was 0.11 °C below average
End of wet season tropical cyclone
- A tropical low formed into tropical cyclone Frances over the Timor Sea on the 27th, before moving away southwest into Western Australian waters

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Northern Territory using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Tuesday 2 May 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
