Northern Territory in June 2022: warm across the Top End

June was very warm across the Top End, with daytime temperatures 1 to 3 degrees above average and night-time temperatures 2 to 4 degrees above average in many areas. In the southern half of the Territory temperatures were close to average. Cloud bands at the start and end of the month, and unseasonal thunderstorms, led to most of the Northern Territory recording above average rainfall.

Above average rainfall

  • June rainfall was above average across most of the Northern Territory, in what is usually the dry season.
  • For the Territory as whole, 11.0 mm of rain fell during the month, 74% above the 1961–1990 average and the highest June total since 2016.
  • Cloud bands crossed the Territory on the 1st and 2nd, and again on the 29th and 30th, with reported daily totals of 10 to 50 mm in some areas from unseasonal thunderstorms.
  • A few sites south-west of Darwin had their highest June daily rainfall on record or their highest total June rainfall on record.
  • Cape Wessel, at the far east of Arnhem Land, recorded 109.4 mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 30th, the second-highest June daily total on record for the Top End and the ninth-highest on record for the Territory as a whole.
  • Cape Wessel recorded 238.0 mm for the month, its highest total June rainfall since 1990.

Very warm across the Top End

  • It was very warm in June across the Top End, although temperatures were close to average across the southern half of the Territory.
  • For the Territory as a whole, the June mean temperature was 0.74 °C above the 1961–1990 average.
  • Mean maximum temperatures across the Top End were 1 to 3 °C above the 1961–1990 June average, with some areas in the warmest 10% of all years since 1910.
  • Mean minimum temperatures across the Top End were 1 to 4 °C above the 1961–1990 June average and many areas were in the warmest 10% of all years since 1910.
  • Gove Airport had its highest June mean daily minimum temperature on record.
  • It was especially warm in the Top End at the start of the month, when several sites had their highest June temperature on record or their warmest June night on record.
  • Bradshaw recorded 37.8 °C on 5th, the equal second-highest temperature ever recorded in June in Australia, 0.1 °C cooler than the 37.9 °C recorded there on 7 June 2016.
  • McCluer Island, off the Arnhem Land coast, recorded a minimum temperature of 28.1 °C on the 1st, a June record for the Northern Territory and the sixth-highest on record in June for Australia.
  • Darwin Airport had 5 nights with a minimum temperature of at least 25.0 °C; the previous June record was 4 such nights in 2016, and there have been only 4 other nights in June since 1941.
  • For most of the southern half of the Territory, June temperatures were generally within 1 °C of their average.
  • Curtin Springs recorded a maximum of 10.7 °C on the 1st during the passage of a cloud band, its coldest June day on record.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, usually published in the first week of the following month, lists the main features of the weather in Northern Territory using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 5 July 2022. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.

Information about Australian Indigenous seasonal calendars is available at the Indigenous Weather Knowledge website.
