Queensland Monthly Climate Summary March 2007

Summary

Drier than average conditions persisted in the southeast of the state in March in the continued absence of significant rainfall producing systems in this region. Elsewhere in the state, rainfall totals were mixed.

Rainfall

Drier than average rainfall was recorded over much of Central and Southeast Queensland, and in a few pockets in the far north. Parts of Cape York Peninsula, the Gulf and the far southwest received above average rainfall. Elsewhere March totals did not vary significantly from average. Refer to the maps of rainfall deciles and total rainfall.

The highest recorded rainfall for March in the state was 1000.0 mm at Bellenden Ker Top Station.  Brisbane City reported 20.6 mm in March, which is only 15% of the longterm monthly average.

From the start of the tropical cyclone season in November to the end of March, rainfall totals were well below average over Southeast Queensland and parts of Central Queensland and the Maranoa. Above average rainfall was recorded in the southwest of the state during this period. This is usually the wettest time of the year in Queensland.  Refer to the maps of rainfall deciles for the five month period from November 2006 to March 2007.

Temperature

Daytime maximum temperatures were warmer than average over most of the state, with well above average temperatures over much of the southern and central interior. An average of over 3 degrees warmer than normal was recorded in many places. Temperatures were closer to average over Cape York Pensinsula and the Gulf Country, where some parts recorded cooler than average daytime temperatures. Refer to the map of maximum temperature anomalies. 

The hottest day was 44.6°C at Birdsville Airport on the 4th.  The coldest day was 19.5°C at Applethorpe on the 13th. 

Overnight minimum temperatures were warmer than average in most areas, especially in the west where temperatures were typically 2 to 3 degrees warmer than usual. Some parts of Cape York Peninsula, however, recorded slightly cooler than average minimum temperatures for the month. Refer to the map of minimum temperature anomalies.

The coldest night was 5.0°C at Dalby on the 31st.  The warmest night was 31.1°C at Quilpie on the 5th.
