Queensland climate summary for May 2007

Summary

Temperatures across the state, except for Cape York Peninsula, where above average for the month and  Queensland recorded its warmest May on record.

Rainfall

May rainfall totals were mixed across the state with much of the Central Interior and Southeast recording below average totals.  Rainfall associated with a frontal system that brought significant rainfall to New South Wales and Victoria led to above average totals in parts of the Channel Country, mainly near the southern border. Localised rainfall brought above average totals to many parts of the Northern Tropics, though some areas missed out and remained below average for the month. Elsewhere totals were generally close to average. Coolmunda Dam on the Darling Downs recorded its lowest May rainfall total of 7.6 mm in 31 years of record (average 51 mm).  A list of rainfall records appears below.  

Brisbane recorded a total of 39 mm, little more than half the long-term average of 53 mm, though rainfall was very localised with bayside suburbs faring better and western suburbs receiving lower totals. 

Temperature

Both daytime maximum and overnight minimum temperatures were above average across the state, with the exception being some small areas with slighter cooler than average maximum temperatures on Cape York Peninsula. 

Taking the state as a whole, and based on figures since 1950, Queensland recorded its warmest May on record. The average day-time maximum temperature across the state was 2.8 degrees warmer than average for the month and the highest on record, while the minimum temperatures were 2.5 degrees warmer and 2^nd warmest on record.

Long-standing records were broken at a number of places:

New monthly mean maximum temperatures for May were recorded at Georgetown with 34°C (average 30.3°C, previous record 32.2°C, 114 years of record), Camooweal with 32.4°C (average 28.9°C, previous record 31.9°C, 100 years of record), Gatton with 27.2°C (average 23.6°C, previous record 26.9°C, 84 years of record) and Rockhampton with 28.4°C (average 26°C, previous record 28°C, 68 years of record). 

A particularly hot spell at the start of the month saw many new daily maximum records. Richmond Post Office recorded its hottest May temperature in 114 years of record (37.0°C, previous record 36.8) and Amberley recorded a new May maximum of 33.3°C (previous record 32.8, 66 years of record). A new record for the highest temperature in Queensland during May was reported from Julia Creek on the 4^th with 39.3°C.  

Brisbane’s temperatures were about 3 degrees warmer than average for the month. For more details see the summary table.
