August in Queensland 2007

Summary

Flash flooding in Tewantin and Noosaville along with record monthly rainfall in the Southeast Coast and Wide Bay districts still leaves the south of the state with less than average rainfall for the year to date.

Rainfall

Much needed rain fell in the Southeast during August.  However, some very high daily totals concentrated over the Noosa, Maroochy and upper Mary catchments resulted in flash flooding at Tewantin and Noosaville on the 24th.  

A complex low-pressure system located east of Fraser Island and a large high east of Tasmania on the 23rd brought strong to gale force winds, dangerous surf and torrential rainfall to the Southeast Coast and Wide Bay districts.  As a result of the east coast low, some of these daily totals exceeded the long term average monthly rainfall in these regions.

The highest monthly total was 1153 mm at Coops Corner, followed by 1019 mm at Mt Bilewilam.

The wettest single day was the 24th with 714 mm at Coops Corner, 713 mm at Rainbow Beach and 689 mm at Mt Bilewilam.

Brisbane's total monthly rainfall for August was 91.2 mm (average 45.9 mm), with the highest daily total of 35.8 mm at 9am on the 24th.

Temperature

Both minimum and maximum temperatures were close to average for the month of August.

The hottest day was 37.1°C at Scherger RAAF on the 23rd, and the coldest day was 9.9°C at Applethorpe on the 19th.

The coldest night was −4.6°C at Stanthorpe on the 7th,  while the warmest night was 25.1°C at both Coconut and Horn Islands on the 16th.

Brisbane had an average maximum temperature of 23.1°C, and an average minimum temperature of 11.4°C.  The hottest day was 28.8°C and the coolest night was 5.4°C.
