Queensland in November 2007

Summary

Most of southern Queensland received above average rainfall for November, with large areas of the Warrego, Central Highlands and Central Lowlands receiving very much above average falls.  However, long term rainfall deficiencies still persist in the southeast of the state in particular, with the southern Brisbane and Gold Coast regions only receiving 40−60 percent of the long term average rainfall for the year to date.

Rainfall

In the last week of the month an upper level low pressure system over southern Queensland produced areas of rain with some locally heavy falls.  The wettest overall place for November was Rewan in the Central Highlands with 354.0 mm, due to several days of rain associated with this system.  Some record high rainfall totals for November also occurred in the Central Highlands area, at Nive Downs and Tambo.

Rainfall associated with the system also resulted in the highest daily rainfall totals for the month, which were 129.0 mm at Franklyn Vale, followed by 98.0 mm at Roma.  The next highest daily rainfall total for the month was 89.6 mm at Rockhampton on the 6th, which was associated with a thunderstorm.

Above average rainfall for the month resulted over much of southern Queensland with large areas of the Warrego, Central Highlands and Central Lowlands receiving very much above average totals.

Brisbane received 61.8 mm of rain in November (the long term average is 97.0 mm).

Temperature

Mean maximum (day-time) temperatures were 3 to 4°C below average over large areas of the Warrego, Central Highlands and Central Lowlands due to cloud cover and rainfall.  The remainder of the state recorded below average day-time temperatures, apart from the Peninsula and pockets of the Central Coast that were just above average for the month.



Apart from the Peninsula and pockets of the Central Coast recording up to 1°C above average, the remainder of the state was below average
most of the rest of southern inland Queensland.  Mean maximum temperatures over northern Queensland and along the southeast Queensland coast were within a degree of average.  

Mean minimum (overnight) temperatures were 1 to 2°C above average over much of the Darling Downs, Maranoa, eastern Warrego and over parts of the Western districts.  Mean minimum temperatures were within a degree of average over most of the rest of the state.

The hottest day was 43.4°C at Century Mine on the 30th, and the coldest night was 6.6°C at Applethorpe on the 14th.

Some sites had their coldest November day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.

Brisbane recorded a mean maximum temperature of 26.7°C (1.1°C below the long term average), and a mean minimum temperature of 18.3 degrees (0.2°C above the long term average) for November. 

Wind

The strongest recorded wind gust was 94 km/h at Mount Isa Aero, followed by 93 km/h at Julia Creek Airport, both on the 14th.  The wind gusts were associated with thunderstorms in these districts.
