Queensland in December 2007

Thunderstorms brought some welcomed rainfall in December to much of Queensland.
Mean minimum (overnight) temperatures were generally about average, but mean maximum (day-time) temperatures over most of the state were below average due to the rainfall.

Rainfall

Thunderstorm activity over the North Tropical Coastal districts produced some good daily rainfall totals on the 27th.  The highest daily rainfalls were 389.0 mm at McAvoy Bridge Alert , 381.0 mm at Bulgun Creek Alert, 363.6 mm at Daradgee and 341.0 mm at Daintree Tea, all on the 27th.

The highest monthly rainfall was 826.8 mm at Cape Tribulation Store, followed by 740.0 mm at Daintree Tea.  Both of these sites are in the North Tropical Coastal district.

Storm activity continued to provide the central, western, and southern border districts with good rainfall totals for the month. Some sites had their highest total December rainfall on record.  However, despite the thunderstorm activity over much of the state, parts of the east coast and adjacent inland  from about Rockhampton down to the state border only received average monthly rainfall.

Brisbane received  79.2 mm where the long-term average for December is 133.3 mm.  Surrounding sites in the greater Brisbane area also fell short of average rainfall for the month.  Archerfield received  54.8 mm (long-term average 125.5 mm) and Brisbane Airport received 36.2 mm (long-term average 126.2 mm).

Temperature

Mean maximum temperatures were generally average to below average across most of the state due to the thunderstorm activity keeping temperatures at bay.  Most of the Maranoa and Warrego, and parts of the Central West where up to 4°C below average for the month.  Only small parts of the Peninsula, and North Tropical Coastal districts were up to 2°C above average.

The hottest day was 45.0°C at Camooweal Township on the 2nd.  The warmest days on average were 39.9°C at Urandangi.

Mean minimum temperatures for the month were within 1°C of the average across most of the state.  

The coldest night was 9.0°C at Bedourie Police Station on the 28th, with the coolest nights on average were 14.7°C at Applethorpe.

The warmest night was 31.1°C at Birdsville Airport, followed by 30.5°C at Bedourie Police Station, both on the 18th.  Some sites had their warmest December night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.

Brisbane's mean maximum temperature for the month was 28.5°C (−0.6°C below the long-term average) and the mean minimum temperature was 20.5°C (+0.7°C above the long-term average).
