An active monsoon with an embedded low pressure system over the Northern Territory and an upper trough produced heavy widespread rainfall areas and thunderstorms across northern Queensland early in January. A third of the state across the northwest was flood affected by the end of the first week. A low pressure system developed in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria on the 8th with the monsoon trough extending from the low across the north tropical coast to the northern Coral Sea. The low deepened into Tropical Cyclone Charlotte by the 11th and moved east across the coast near the Gilbert River mouth early on the 12th, before weakening below tropical cyclone strength over the eastern Gulf Country. These monsoon systems continued the widespread rainfall across northern Queensland, further exacerbating the flooding in the northwest and causing flooding along the northeast tropical coast. The flood waters in the west gradually made the long trip down the Channel Country river systems.
The bulk of the rainfall in the southeast of the state occurred during the last week and a half of the month.
Readers are referred to the Brisbane Metro Climate Summary for more details about the Brisbane region.
The Queensland state-wide rainfall average for January was 229.3 mm, which is the highest it has been since 1991, well above the long-term average of 127.7 mm. Large areas of the Gulf Country, Northwest, Northern Goldfields, Herbert and Lower Burdekin, Northern Tropical Coast and Tablelands and western Channel Country received very much above average rainfall for January due to the active monsoon. A number of sites in these areas received their highest total January rainfall on record and quite a few more received their highest total January rainfall for at least 20 years. In contrast, parts of the Southeast Coast district and central Peninsula and much of the southern Central Highlands and Coalfields and Darling Downs and Granite Belt received below average rainfall for the month. Ballandean Post Office on the Darling Downs received its lowest total January rainfall on record and Mantuan Downs in the Central Highlands received its lowest total January rainfall for at least 20 years.

In the northwest, several sites had their lowest January mean daily maximum temperature on record and a number of sites had their lowest January mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years. Croydon Township and Mount Isa Aero in the Lower Carpentaria both recorded their coldest January day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.

Jump to: Extremes Maps Records Summaries Notes the top
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 7 am on Monday 2 February 2009. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations
from all
available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of
record,
as they cannot then be calculated reliably. * In this case, normals
from a nearby suitable site may be included to calculate statistics
(these are marked with an *).
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares
with the climate record for the site,
based on the decile
ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1,
low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high
in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has
fallen this time as a
percentage
of the long-term mean.
