The start of the month saw much activity across the state. By the end of January, a tropical low had developed on the monsoon trough and was positioned over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria. This low deepened slowly and produced further heavy rainfall in already flooded areas.
As this low weakened, a second low developed on the monsoon trough east of Cairns, strengthening to become Tropical Cyclone "Ellie" early on the 1st of February. "Ellie" remained a category 1 system as it crossed the coast near Cardwell early on the 2nd, bringing further flood producing rainfall between Cardwell and Mackay as it moved inland and weakened into a tropical depression. Flood warnings were issued for the Tully, Murray, Herbert, Burdekin, Haughton and Pioneer Rivers.
A further weak low was identified on the monsoon trough to the east of Cairns on the 4th, drifting northward with the monsoon trough and produced further heavy rainfall on the North Tropical Coast between the 4th and 8th, causing renewed rises to inland rivers.
Around the 10th, rainfall eased on the North Tropical Coast, but a band of moderate to heavy rainfall fell across the state from the far northwest to central Queensland causing renewed rises to inland rivers.
From the 12th to the 14th, a surface trough was located from around St Lawrence to the Gulf, generating locally heavy falls up to 200 mm about the Herbert, Burdekin and central coast districts. A low pressure system located north of Charleville also extended northwards, causing thunderstorms between Charleville and Roma, while a surface low developed off the coast near St Lawrence and moved southeast along the coast. Southeast coastal districts saw rainfall totals up to 200 mm for the two days.
Showers and thunderstorms over the tropics generally with rain areas from the southern tropics to the central coast occurred on the 23rd, with Lucinda receiving 245 mm to 9am on the 24th, Halifax with 248 mm and Gairloch with 206 mm.
The monsoon trough was located over northern Cape York Peninsula for most of the month, generating showers and thunderstorms, and also rain areas over most of the central and northern tropics.Area-averaged across the state, the rainfall was 152.07 mm based on figures since 1900.
The wettest overall was 1689.2 mm at Hawkins Creek, followed by 1484.3 mm at Paluma Ivy Cottage, followed by 1483 mm at Bulgun Creek Alert, followed by 1477.2 mm at Cardwell Range.

Jump to: Extremes Records Summaries Notes the top
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Sunday 1 March 2009. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from all
available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they
cannot then be calculated reliably. * In this case, normals from a
nearby suitable site may be included to calculate statistics (these are
marked with an *).
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
