Synoptic summary
At the beginning of the month a low pressure system over the southern Tasman Sea extended a trough onto the east coast of Queensland near Bundaberg. This trough generated showers and thunderstorms from the southern Capricornia to the New South Wales border. Showers and thunderstorms also occurred over the northern tropics and Cape York Peninsula. On the 2nd, a high pressure system in the Tasman Sea extended a ridge over southern Queensland coastal waters. On the 3rd the ridge over the east Queensland coast extended north, with showers developing over most coastal districts. The ridge directed southeast to northeasterly winds across Queensland to a surface trough which extended from the northwest to the southeast inland. This trough separated moist air to the east from dry winds to the west and produced unstable conditions over central parts of the state. Showers and thunderstorms occurred over the south of the state near and to the east of the trough and in the far northwest of the state and over Cape York Peninsula.
On the 8th, a trough and vigorous southerly wind change moving into the Channel Country with associated areas of raised dust. Hot conditions occurred east of the trough associated with northwesterly winds. Record high daily minimum temperatures occurred at Goondiwindi Airport on the 8th, Texas Post Office on the 8th and 9th and Mitchell Post Office, Surat and Roma Airport on the 10th. Dust haze and slightly cooler conditions occurred west of the trough in the southerly winds. Showers and afternoon and evening thunderstorms occurred over Cape York Peninsula and in a band from northwestern to southeastern parts of the state, associated with the trough.
On the 13th light patchy rain occurred in the southwest of the state associated with an upper trough, which moved gradually northeast. Patchy rain occurred over the southern interior on the 14th and over the central interior on the 15th.
On the 17th an area of low pressure in the Northern Territory caused winds over western Queensland to turn northeasterly and become fresh and gusty. The main rain band and wind change associated with an upper and surface trough system approaching from the west, reached the far south-west border of the state in the late evening. The cloud band with rain and thunderstorms reached the southwest Darling Downs during the evening of the 18th. By the 20th the thundery rain band extended from the Gulf Country to southeast districts. Showers and thunderstorms also occurred over central parts of the state and the northern interior.
The upper trough moved offshore on the 21st, reducing instability over eastern districts. By the 22nd a surface trough extended through southwestern Queensland towards eastern Victoria and isolated showers and thunderstorms occurred in a band from the northwest and Peninsula region, to the southeast and southern inland parts of Queensland.
By the 23rd, a high pressure system was located to the northwest of New Zealand and a weak low pressure system was located near the Solomon Islands. Together these systems directed very moist east to northeasterly winds across nearly all of Queensland and widespread showers and thunderstorms occurred over northern and eastern areas, especially over the southeast. By the 24th, a low pressure system (ex TC Laurence, which was first named on the 13th when it developed west of Darwin) was located near the southwest border of Queensland and showers and thunderstorms occurred over the far southwest of the state. On the 25th, the remnants of ex TC Laurence were located near Thargomindah in the Channel Country, with a trough extending northwards into the Gulf Country. This trough generated a rainband and associated thunderstorms through central Queensland and produced some moderate to locally heavy falls.
On the 28th an upper low pressure system off the central coast generated a great depth of very moist northeasterly winds to it's south, into the southeastern corner of Queensland. The surface trough over the interior generated unstable conditions with widespread showers and thunderstorms near and east of it, while rain areas occurred over parts of the southeast and central east districts due to the northeasterly flow generated by the upper low. The upper low moved just inland of the central coast on the 29th and weakened, with rainfall gradually easing over southeastern parts of the state.
By the 30th, a high in the Tasman Sea extended a ridge along the Queensland east coast. Unstable conditions persisted over much of the interior of the state and tropics with widespread showers, thunderstorms and rain areas near and east of the surface trough over southwest Queensland. Some record high December daily rainfalls occurred between the 29th and 31st of the month. Muttaburra's record high December daily rainfall of 223.0 mm, which occurred in the 24 hours to 9am on the 31st, was also a new annual extreme for that station (located in the Central Lowlands).

Notes
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Monday 4 January 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Please note that the rainfall data from Bureau of Meteorology telemetry gauges (those with ALERT, AL or TM in their names) includes real-time operational data from automated systems and has not been checked.Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.
* These sites are compared to other long-term sites in the area.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
