Tropical cyclone Paul affected the northwest Gulf of Carpentaria late in March and after weakening to a low it travelled across southern Gulf waters bringing a deluge to the Gulf Country at the beginning of April. The heavy rainfall focus initiated flooding in the Norman and Nicholson river catchments. The highest rainfalls to 9am on the 2nd included 250 mm at Kingfisher Camp, 235 mm at Burketown, 185 mm at Escott Station and 142 mm at Lawn Hill Gorge. Several communities were isolated for long periods by floodwaters and the resulting damage to roads and airstrips.
Mean overnight minimum temperatures were notably warmer than usual, reflecting an absence of cold nights during the month. This April had the warmest mean minimum temperatures of the last 5 years and the fifth warmest in the record in the area averaged data set that begins in 1950.
Flooding from heavy rainfall earlier in the year continued until the 27th April in the southwest Queensland catchments of the Cooper, Diamantina, Eyre Creek and Balonne river systems.
Ex tropical cyclone Paul, located over south-west Gulf of Carpentaria waters and coastal areas, focused heavy rainfall over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country and initiated flooding in the Norman catchment from the 4th to the 17th, and in the Nicholson catchment from the 2nd to the 12th. Highest rainfalls to 9am on the 2nd included Kingfisher Camp with 250 mm and Burketown with 235 mm.
On the northeast tropical coast, Daintree Village and Cape Tribulation recorded 318 mm to 9am on the 4th causing flooding in the Daintree River between the 4th and the 7th.
Minor flooding occurred in Burpengary Creek during the 21st.
Rainfall was above average across Cape York Peninsula and western Queensland during April, with ex Tropical Cyclone Paul at the beginning of the month contributing the most around the Gulf Country. Part of the central coast, southeast interior and the southern border fringe of the Darling Downs recorded below average rainfall.
The northeast tropical coast area recorded the highest April rainfall total with several sites receiving above 700 mm. Many locations around the Gulf Country received over 400 mm. Outside of tropics, the highest rainfall was recorded along the south coastal fringe with totals over 100 mm. Other smaller areas to receive more than 100 mm were near Winton and a small patch in the Far South West.
Many locations through the Gulf Country had record high daily rainfall totals due to ex Tropical Cyclone Paul and some of the highest daily totals to 9am on the 2nd included: Kingfisher Camp with 250mm, Burketown with 235mm, Escott Station with 185mm and Lawn Hill Gorge with 142mm. Convergence near the monsoon trough on the northeast tropical coast also led to Daintree recording 318 mm on the 4th, breaking their previous April daily rainfall record. Gue with 92 mm and Mahrigong with 114 mm on the 6th in the far west, and Condamine in the Western Darling Downs with 77 mm on the 1st, had record high daily totals.
The wettest overall was Bellenden Ker Top Station with 1507 mm, followed by 924 mm at Clyde Rd Alert*, 887 mm at Bellenden Ker Bottom Station, 876 mm at Bulgun Creek Alert*, 852.8 mm at Daradgee, and 843.0 mm at Babinda Post Office. The wettest single day was 338.6 mm at Westmoreland Station in the Lower Carpentaria on the 2nd, followed by 318.0 mm at Daintree Village and 317.6 mm at Cape Tribulation Store on the northeast tropical coast on the 4th.

See a map of rainfall deciles.Mean temperatures were up to 2 °C above average across the state, the warmest April since 2005 and the 10th highest of the area averaged series that begins in 1950. The main contribution was the milder minimum temperatures and the absence of cold nights.
Mean maximum temperatures were more than a degree lower than the long term average around the southern Gulf of Carpentaria, similarly higher than average in parts of western districts and through much of the Darling Downs and Maranoa, and within a degree of average elsewhere.
Area averaged across the state, the mean maximum temperature was 30.14 °C and 0.27 °C above the long term average.
Coolangatta Airport with 21 years of record and Maroochydore Airport with 16 years of record recorded new highest mean daily maximum temperatures for April with 26.7 °C each.

Area averaged across the state, the minimum temperature was 18.75 °C and 1.41 °C higher than the long term mean. This April was the warmest in the last 5 years and the fifth warmest of the area averaged data set from 1950. There was generally an absence of cold overnight minimum temperatures during the month.
Many locations, mainly along the east coast, had record high mean monthly April minimum temperatures. Although a few cooler changes did push their way across southern districts and up the coast there was generally a lack of cold nights during the month.
The 12th was a particularly warm night in the southeast with Coolangatta, Gold Coast Seaway and Warwick weather stations recording their highest April daily minimum temperature on record, which was 6 to 8 °C above the long term average. Both the Gold Coast Seaway and Warwick weather stations have less than 20 years of record. Double Island Point had a record high April maximum temperature the same day with 32.4 °C.

Details Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 4 May 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 9 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
