Wetter and Cooler Earlier in Month in Western Districts

Weather Summary

A middle level trough, associated with a thick cloud band, approached the western border at the beginning of the month and swept through the southern districts during the following couple of days. Light rain areas spread across the southwestern districts on the 2nd then enhanced further and delivered some moderate falls over most inland parts of the southeastern quadrant on the 3rd. A significant cold change followed the trough and dropped the daily maximum temperature down to 4 to 6 degrees below the monthly averages over the most southwestern and southern interior districts for the first few days of the month. Some localised parts were even 8 to 10 degrees below the local means. The nighttime minimum temperatures remained only slightly below the normal figures during this cold change.

An inland trough lay over the northwestern districts on the 5th then extended across the central and southern interior on the 6th before progressing across the central and southern coast on the 7th. Patchy rain developed over the southwestern parts on the 6th again, then spread over most western and southern districts during the next few days while easing. Moderate rainfall was reported over the southwestern districts on the 7th. An even deeper cold change brought the maxima about 10 degrees below the monthly means over the western and southern interior region on the 6th and 7th with the rest of the southern half of the state 4 to 5 degrees below the local averages between the 6th to 9th.

Another moderate trough swept through the southern border areas on the 13th and 14th. Rain areas and isolated thunderstorms delivered some light to moderate falls over the southwestern and southern interior region. A moderate cool change dropped both maxima and minima 2 to 3 degrees below the local monthly averages over the following few days.

The passage of a dry surface trough over the southern half of the state during the 19th and 20th was followed by mild cooler conditions, 2 to 4 degrees lower than normal, over most southern, western and central interior districts.

On the 26th, an upper trough amplified over western Queensland and pushed a middle level cloud band with rain areas and thunderstorms over the southwestern corner on the 27th. The cloud band progressed over the southern and southeastern districts and produced some moderate to locally heavy falls on the 28th and 29th.

The large high over the Tasman Sea extended a ridge along the Queensland east coast and further developed into a blocking high over the southeast corner on the 29th and 30th. Relatively warm and moist northeast to northwest winds spread most of the state and raised the maxima 8 to 10 degrees above the local means over the southern and central interior and 3 to 5 degrees above the means along the coastal region on the 30th.

Isolated showers affected the tropical districts and scattered showers and rain areas were experienced along the North Tropical Coast region between the 24th and 27th.

Rainfall

Areas of above average rainfall were recorded over the western, southwestern, southern interior and the tropical districts while the central and southeastern districts remained close to the long term monthly means.

The state-wide average rainfall for Queensland was 23.68 mm, which is slightly above the long-term average rainfall for July (1961-90) of 19.04 mm.

The wettest overall was 450.0 mm at Topaz Alert*, followed by 347.3 mm at Point Lookout, followed by 333.8 mm at Tully Sugar Mill. The southern parts of the Gulf Coast and the Goldfields received no rain.

Some sites had their highest total July rainfall on record. Some sites had their highest total July rainfall for at least 20 years. Some sites had their lowest total July rainfall on record.

The wettest single day was 173.0 mm at Point Lookout on the 29th, followed by 72.8 mm at Miami Bardon Ave on the 28th, followed by 65.0 mm at Burleigh Waters Alert* on the 28th.

Temperature

The maximum temperatures were slightly cooler than the mean figures over the southwestern quadrant while generally 1 to 2 degrees warmer than normal over the tropical districts and about 2 to 3 degrees above means over the Goldfields.

The minimum temperatures were 3 to 5 degrees warmer than the local monthly averages along the tropical, north central coasts and over the Goldfields, while remaining 1 to 3 degrees above the means over the southern, western and the Peninsula districts.

The statewide-averaged mean monthly temperature was 1.98 °C above the long-term (1961-90) average of 15.94 °C.

Maximum temperature

The hottest day was 36.1 °C at both Richmond Airport and Richmond Post Office on the 30th, followed by 35.6 °C at Julia Creek Airport on the 30th following 35.5 °C on the 29th.

The warmest days on average were 32.8 °C at Kowanyama Airport, followed by 32.1 °C at both Coconut Island and Weipa Aero, then 31.8 °C at Scherger RAAF.

The coolest days on average were 14.7 °C at Applethorpe, followed by 15.3 °C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade, followed by 16.5 °C at Toowoomba Airport.

The coldest day occurred on the 7th, when 8.1 °C was recorded at Charleville Aero, followed by 9.1 °C at Injune Post Office, then 9.2 °C at Inglewood Forest.

Minimum temperature

The coldest night was -4.6 °C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade on the 4th, followed by -3.6 °C at Applethorpe on the 4th and 16th, also at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade on the 16th, then -3.5 °C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade on the 1st.

The coolest nights on average were 3.8 °C at both Applethorpe and Stanthorpe Leslie Parade, followed by 5.8 °C at both Bollon Mary St and Mitchell Post Office, then 6.1 °C at Warwick.

The warmest nights on average were 25.3 °C at Coconut Island, followed by 25.1 °C at Horn Island, then 23.8 °C at Willis Island.

The warmest night was 26.2 °C at Coconut Island on the 2nd and the 4th, also at Horn Island on the 27th, followed by 26.1 °C at Coconut Island on the 30th and the 31st, also at Horn Island on the 30th.

Wind

The strongest wind gust was 89 km/h at Double Island Point Lighthouse on the 9th, followed by 85 km/h at Cape Moreton Lighthouse on the 8th and 9th, then 80 km/h at Double Island Point Lighthouse on the 8th.

Fog

Widespread fog and low level cloud affected central and southeast Queensland on the 30th then contracted to the northern parts southeast coast on the 31st.
