Monday, 1 November 2010 - Monthly Climate Summary for Queensland - Product code IDCKGC24R0
Details Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
Most of Queensland has been wetter than average during October, with 35% of the state experiencing very much above average (decile 10) rainfall and 2% of the state experiencing it's highest rainfall on record. This is consistent with the current moderate to strong La Niña event in the Pacific. La Niña periods are generally associated with above normal rainfall during the second half of the year across large parts of Australia, most notably eastern and northern regions. The main periods of rainfall affecting large parts of the state occurred between the 8th and the 12th, the 15th and 16th, the 21st and 22nd and the 30th and 31st, with daily rainfall records broken on the 4th, between the 8th and 12th, 15th and 16th and on the 21st. Night time temperatures are also historically warmer than average during La Niña periods and Queensland's area-averaged mean minimum temperature for October has indeed been higher than average. Maximum temperatures have been well below the long term average due to the persistent cloudy conditions during the month, with the 5th lowest October state-averaged mean maximum temperature on record for Queensland (based on figures since 1950).
On the 3rd, isolated to scattered showers occurred along the east coast
and over some adjacent inland areas, with relative shower
maxima in the vicinity of a low level convergence line on the
northeast tropical coast and on the southeast coast due to the
development of an offshore easterly trough. Coolangatta recorded
its highest October daily rainfall on record in the 24 hours to 9am on
the 4th.
On the 7th, a thundery rain band moved across southern Queensland.
Instability increased ahead of a trough over the interior
and isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms developed over
most inland areas, extending to the coast in the southeast. Tambo
Post Office recorded its highest October daily rainfall on record in
the 24 hours to 9am on the 8th.
Overnight on the 8th and into the early morning of the 9th an upper
trough combined with a strong southeasterly change caused heavy
rain areas over the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland. On the 9th, an
intensifying high pressure system over the southern Tasman Sea and a
trough near the south coast increased winds along the
southeast coast overnight and into the 10th, with increasing
rainfall. The systems produced wind gusts in excess of
90 km/hr, mainly along the exposed coast and over the islands. Strong
to gale force winds onto the south coast maintained very rough
seas and large swells leading to dangerous beach and surf conditions.
Nine weather stations with 25 or more years of data had their
highest daily rainfall on record in the 24 hours to 9am on the 9th or 11th.
The intense
high pressure system over the southern Tasman Sea weakened with easing winds early on the 13th and
dangerous beach and surf conditions ceased.
The next upper trough moved into central Australia by the evening
of the 14th, increasing the cloud and instability around western parts
of the state, resulting in showers and storms through most western
districts, tending to thundery rain in the southwest during the
afternoon. In the east, an old surge line continued to enhance
showers in the Bowen to Cairns region and over the adjacent
inland. The
upper trough axis moved into southwest Queensland during the
morning of the 15th and into central areas by night. A
vigorous surface trough accompanied it, with fresh to strong and
gusty winds in front of the trough and very dry fresh to
strong and gusty southwesterly winds behind it. Thundery
rain spread rapidly
east during the day. A wind gust in excess of 90km/hr was
recorded at Cape Moreton.
Patchy rain increased over the northern tropics on the 20th due to
persistent cloud formed ahead of an upper trough moving into Western
Queensland. A combination of patchy light rain, showers and
thunderstorms occurred in the northwest of the state on the 21st and
rain occurred across the southern tropics to the central coast.
The highest October total rainfall for Queensland was 1313.0 mm at Bellenden Ker Top station, which is a new Australian high October total rainfall record, followed by 831.6 mm at Happy Valley near The Boulders in the Barron North Coast district (well above the previous October total rainfall record of 479.4 mm in 1978 at that station), followed by 774.6 mm at Treehouse Creek and 703.8 mm at Babinda Sugar Mill in the Barron North Coast district, followed by 684.5 mm at Russell River in the Herbert North Coast district, followed by 605.0 mm at Tomewin - Tallowood in the Moreton South Coast district, followed by 563.0 mm at Tully Sugar Mill in the Herbert North Coast district. Details Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Monday 1 November 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 9 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
