  • Third lowest October state-averaged mean maximum temperature in 61 years of record
  • Lowest October state-averaged mean temperature since 1985

Summary

Most of Queensland has been wetter than average during October, with 35% of the state experiencing very much above average (decile 10) rainfall and 2% of the state experiencing it's highest rainfall on record.  This is consistent with the current moderate to strong La Niña event in the Pacific.  La Niña periods are generally associated with above normal rainfall during the second half of the year across large parts of Australia, most notably eastern and northern regions.  The main periods of rainfall affecting large parts of the state occurred between the 8th and the 12th, the 15th and 16th, the 21st and 22nd and the 30th and 31st, with daily rainfall records broken on the 4th, between the 8th and 12th, 15th and 16th and on the 21st.  Night time temperatures are also historically warmer than average during La Niña periods and Queensland's area-averaged mean minimum temperature for October has indeed been higher than average. Maximum temperatures have been well below the long term average due to the persistent cloudy conditions during the month, with the 5th lowest October state-averaged mean maximum temperature on record for Queensland (based on figures since 1950).

Main Weather Systems

On the 3rd, isolated to scattered showers occurred along the east coast and over some adjacent inland areas, with relative shower maxima in the vicinity of a low level convergence line on the northeast tropical coast and on the southeast coast due to the development of an offshore easterly trough.  Coolangatta recorded its highest October daily rainfall on record in the 24 hours to 9am on the 4th.

On the 7th, a thundery rain band moved across southern Queensland.  Instability increased ahead of a trough over the interior and isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms developed over most inland areas, extending to the coast in the southeast.  Tambo Post Office recorded its highest October daily rainfall on record in the 24 hours to 9am on the 8th.

Overnight on the 8th and into the early morning of the 9th an upper trough combined with a strong southeasterly change caused heavy rain areas over the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland.  On the 9th, an intensifying high pressure system over the southern Tasman Sea and a trough near the south coast increased winds along the southeast coast overnight and into the 10th, with increasing rainfall.  The systems produced wind gusts in excess of 90 km/hr, mainly along the exposed coast and over the islands. Strong to gale force winds onto the south coast maintained very rough seas and large swells leading to dangerous beach and surf conditions.  Nine weather stations with 25 or more years of data had their highest daily rainfall on record in the 24 hours to 9am on the 9th or 11th.  Flash flooding occurred on the 11th in creeks and streams, including at Toombul, Carseldine and Boondall.  The spillway gates at North Pine Dam, northwest of Brisbane were opened in response to the heavy falls.

The intense high pressure system over the southern Tasman Sea weakened with easing winds early on the 13th and dangerous beach and surf conditions ceased.

The next upper trough moved into central Australia by the evening of the 14th, increasing the cloud and instability around western parts of the state, resulting in showers and storms through most western districts, tending to thundery rain in the southwest during the afternoon.  In the east, an old surge line continued to enhance showers in the Bowen to Cairns region and over the adjacent inland.  The upper trough axis moved into southwest Queensland during the morning of the 15th and into central areas by night. A vigorous surface trough accompanied it, with fresh to strong and gusty winds in front of the trough and very dry fresh to strong and gusty southwesterly winds behind it.  Thundery rain spread rapidly east during the day.  A wind gust in excess of 90km/hr was recorded at Cape Moreton.

Patchy rain increased over the northern tropics on the 20th due to persistent cloud formed ahead of an upper trough moving into Western Queensland. A combination of patchy light rain, showers and thunderstorms occurred in the northwest of the state on the 21st and rain occurred across the southern tropics to the central coast.

On the 29th, the next mid to upper trough moved into central Australia.  The associated cloud band entered far western Queensland and a surface trough crossed the western border late in the day.  Hot conditions occurred through western Queensland in the northerly winds ahead of the trough and fresh south to southwesterly winds occurred in its wake.  In the twenty-four hours to 9am on the 30th, showers and thunderstorms occurred about western Queensland and Cape York Peninsula with just isolated showers about the east coast, mainly north of Hinchinbrook Island.  In the 6 hours to 3pm, patchy light rain fell over the interior whilst thunderstorms affected the Gulf Country coast.  In the 24 hours to 9am on the 31st, isolated showers and thunderstorms occurred about central inland Queensland, Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country.  Isolated showers also occurred about the east coast, mainly north of Townsville.  In the 6 hours to 3pm Sunday, there were isolated showers about the North Tropical Coast and isolated showers and thunderstorms over the northern interior.

Rainfall

Most of Queensland was wetter than average during October, with 35% of the state experiencing very much above average (decile 10) rainfall and 2% of the state experiencing it's highest rainfall on record.  The state-averaged rainfall was 51.47 mm, well above the long-term average of 25.60 mm and the highest since 2000.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Monday 1 November 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 9 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

* The data for October 2010 at this site has been compared to another nearby site with a longer record.
