Weekly rainfall summary

Up to the 6th:  Heaviest falls towards the end of the week as a trough drew moist tropical air into Queensland. Falls in excess of 50 mm were recorded in much of northern and central Queensland, with heaviest falls along the north coast south of Innisfail, with 212 mm at Bingil Bay, the highest recorded national rainfall for the week
7th to13th: At the start of the week, a low pressure trough in the northeast triggered rainfall in southern Queensland. Towards the end of the week, a low pressure trough and offshore low triggered heavy rain along the Queensland coast, as well as far north Queensland. Falls in excess of 50 mm were recorded across large parts of south-eastern Queensland, including falls above 100 mm along the coast, with 240 mm at Lady Elliot Island in Queensland, the highest nationally recorded rainfall for the week. Large areas also exceeded 50 mm in far north Queensland
14th to 20th: During the first half of the week, a complex low pressure trough across northern Australia triggered isolated thunderstorms and rain across northern Australia. Towards the end of the week this low pressure trough extended into the southeast, bringing moist tropical air to the area and triggering rain and thunderstorms across eastern parts of the country. Later in the week an active monsoonal trough produced falls over parts of the tropical north. Falls in excess of 50 mm were recorded across the tropical north of Australia, as well as parts of southwestern Queensland, with isolated falls in excess of 50 mm across Queensland. The heaviest falls occurred in northern Queensland, with 227 mm at Bingil Bay the highest Australian recorded rainfall for the week.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 3 January 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 9 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The temperature anomalies are the differences to the respective 1961-1990 averages.

Please note that the rainfall data from telemetry gauges (those with ALERT, AL or TM in their names) may be from non-Bureau owned stations and includes real-time operational data from automated systems and has not been checked.
