Queensland in January 2012: Hot start, wet finish

  • The area averaged January maximum temperature (compared to the 1961-90 average) was the highest since 2006 
  • Only 10% of the state received below average rainfall (around 44% above average)
  • There were 17 high daily and 11 high monthly rainfall records broken

Rainfall

The Queensland area averaged rainfall was 126.31 mm. 

The wettest overall was Springbrook Road with 870.3 mm, followed by Tomewin - Tallowood with 861.0 mm, followed by Lower Springbrook Alert with 823.4 mm.

Some sites had their highest total January rainfall on record. Some sites had their highest total January rainfall for at least 20 years. Some sites had their lowest total January rainfall on record. Some sites had their lowest total January rainfall for at least 20 years.

The wettest single day was at Lower Springbrook Alert with 313.6 mm on the 25th, followed by Springbrook Road with 291.0 mm on the 25th, followed by Corbould Pk Racecourse with 288.0 mm on the 25th.

Weekly rainfall summary 

Up to the10th: Late in the week a low pressure trough extended eastward to trigger thunderstorms and locally heavy rain over parts of Queensland. Falls of between 25 and 50 mm were recorded in isolated areas
11th to 17th: A low pressure trough extended across northern and eastern Australia during the week, resulting in locally heavy rain over parts of Queensland. Isolated rainfall totals exceeding 150 mm were reported in parts of Queensland. Rainfall totals greater than 50 mm were recorded in northern Queensland, becoming more scattered into the eastern NSW-Queensland border region
18th to 24th: During the week, an active monsoon trough, as well as other low pressure troughs, resulted in high rainfall totals in parts of northern Australia. Rainfall totals of greater than 200 mm were recorded in the Herbert and Peninsula districts. Large-area rainfall totals of greater than 50 mm were reported in much of central Queensland and the southeast Queensland coast;
25th to 31st: An active monsoon trough across the north, along with surface troughs throughout the centre and east of the continent, resulted in heavy rainfall and flooding in many parts of northern Australia, southern Queensland and on the east coast between Rockhampton and northern NSW. Areas with rainfall totals exceeding 400 mm were in south-east Queensland. Large-area rainfall totals of greater than 200 mm were reported in the NT-QLD border region of the Gulf of Carpentaria. The south-east Queensland Moreton districts, with some other localised areas in Queensland, reported widespread rainfall totals greater than 200 mm. Most of Queensland recorded more than 50 mm of rainfall, with a significant number of rainfall totals greater than 100 mm being recorded in parts of inland and coastal Queensland.

Temperature

The Queensland area averaged mean temperature anomaly was -0.19 °C.

The warmest on average was Boulia Airport with 33.6 °C, followed by Birdsville Airport with 33.4 °C, followed by Bedourie Police Station with 32.4 °C.

The coolest on average was Applethorpe with 19.9 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 20.6 °C, followed by Toowoomba Airport with 21.7 °C.

Maximum temperature

The Queensland area averaged maximum temperature anomaly was 0.07 °C.

The hottest day was at Birdsville Airport with 47.5 °C on the 7th, followed by Ballera Gas Field with 45.6 °C on the 7th, followed by Windorah Post Office with 45.6 °C on the 7th, followed by Bedourie Police Station with 45.2 °C on the 7th.

The warmest days on average were at Birdsville Airport with 40.3 °C, followed by Boulia Airport with 40.3 °C, followed by Urandangi with 40.3 °C, followed by Bedourie Police Station with 40.0 °C, followed by The Monument Airport with 39.1 °C.

The coolest days on average were at Applethorpe with 25.1 °C, followed by Maleny Tamarind St with 25.3 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 25.7 °C.

The coldest day was at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 17.2 °C on the 15th, followed by Applethorpe with 18.0 °C on the 15th, followed by Applethorpe with 19.4 °C on the 28th.

Minimum temperature

The Queensland area averaged minimum temperature anomaly was -0.44 °C (the lowest since 2000).

The coldest night was at Applethorpe with 7.9 °C on the 12th, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 7.9 °C on the 12th, followed by Roma Airport with 9.2 °C on the 13th, followed by Applethorpe with 9.7 °C on the 11th.

The coolest nights on average were at Applethorpe with 14.8 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 15.5 °C, followed by Warwick with 16.7 °C.

The warmest nights on average were at Sweers Island with 26.8 °C, followed by Boulia Airport with 26.7 °C, followed by Birdsville Airport with 26.5 °C.

The warmest night was at Birdsville Airport with 32.8 °C on the 21st, followed by Ballera Gas Field with 32.2 °C on the 8th, followed by Boulia Airport with 31.5 °C on the 8th.

Wind

The strongest wind gust was at Hughenden Airport with 170 km/h on the 22nd, followed by Winton Airport with 113 km/h on the 21st, followed by Trepell Airport with 102 km/h on the 21st.

Other phenomena

Extreme rainfall began in the south-east around the 24th and it rained 8 days straight for Brisbane and the surrounds, including the Gold Coast, but 16 days for the Sunshine Coast 

A surface trough created dry, fresh and gusty west to south-westerly winds, contributing to a record low relative humidity of 13% on the 11th at Brisbane

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 1 February 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 9 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The temperature anomalies are the differences to the respective 1961-1990 averages.

Please note that the rainfall data from telemetry gauges (those with ALERT, AL or TM in their names) may be from non-Bureau owned stations and includes real-time operational data from automated systems and has not been checked.
