Queensland in May 2012: Wet in the north, cool nights mostly in the south

• Over half of the state recorded above average rainfall
• There were a total of  8 daily rainfall records and 3 overall May rainfall records broken
• Around 68% of the state experienced cooler nights
• There were 13 daily low maximum temperature records and 3 daily minimum tempertures records broken

Rainfall

The Queensland area averaged rainfall was 31 mm (highest since 1998). 

The wettest overall was 1062.0 mm at Bellenden Ker Top, followed by Nerada Alert with 591.0 mm, followed by Tung Oil Alert with 519.0 mm, followed by Tully Sugar Mill with 466.1 mm.

Some sites had their highest total May rainfall on record. Some sites had their highest total May rainfall for at least 20 years. 

The wettest single day was at Nerada Alert with 332.0 mm on the 25th, followed by Mossman South Alchera Drive with 317.0 mm on the 25th, followed by Port Douglas - Warner St with 285.0 mm on the 25th.

Some sites had their highest May daily rainfall on record.

Weekly rainfall summary 

Up to 8th: Falls above 50 mm were reported on the islands north of Queensland and in excess of 25 mm were also reported in parts of southeast Queensland. Falls in excess of 5 mm were reported in scattered areas of southeast and coastal Queensland. Large parts of Queensland recorded little to no rainfall at all;
9th to 15th: Isolated thunderstorms produced heavy falls in the Northern Peninsula on the 12th, while the southeast trade showers generated moderate falls along the exposed North Tropical Coast. Falls over 100 mm were recorded at Coconut Island and falls over 50mm at Horn Island. Falls between 10 and 50 mm were recorded in parts of the North Tropical Coast with falls between 5 and 10 mm in exposed coastal regions;
16th to 22nd: Later in the week, easterly flow contributed to persistent rain between Cairns and Townsville. Falls in excess of 25 mm were recorded with the highest recorded total for the week, 213 mm, measured at Tully. Falls of between 5 and 25 mm were recorded along the east coast of Queensland;
23rd to 29th: Most of the rain fell mid-week, as a low pressure system in the Bass Strait and an associated surface trough generated widespread rainfall from Queensland to Tasmania. Falls were heaviest in the Cairns region and an easterly onshore flow at the end of the week triggered locally heavy rain in southeast Queensland. The highest total for the week, 349 mm, was recorded at Mossman. Falls of between 25 and 50 mm were recorded across most of Queensland.

Temperature

The Queensland area averaged mean temperature (see notes section) was -0.78 °C below the long-term average of 19.9 °C (1961-1990).

The warmest on average was Coconut Island with 27.5 °C, followed by Horn Island with 27.1 °C, followed by Weipa Aero with 26.5 °C.

The coolest on average was Applethorpe with 10.9 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 11.0 °C, followed by Warwick with 13.0 °C.

Maximum temperature

The Queensland area averaged maximum temperature (see notes section) was -0.15 °C below the long-term average of 26.2 °C (1961-1990).

The hottest day was at Century Mine with 34.3 °C on the 2nd, followed by Burketown Airport with 34.3 °C on the 3rd, followed by Burketown Airport with 34.2 °C on the 2nd, followed by Camooweal Township with 34.2 °C on the 2nd, followed by Urandangi with 34.1 °C on the 1st, followed by Normanton Airport with 34.1 °C on the 2nd, followed by Normanton Airport with 34.1 °C on the 3rd.

The warmest days on average were at Weipa Aero with 31.2 °C, followed by Scherger RAAF with 30.8 °C, followed by Kowanyama Airport with 30.6 °C.

The coolest days on average were at Applethorpe with 17.9 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 18.6 °C, followed by Toowoomba Airport with 19.5 °C.

The coldest day was at Applethorpe with 11.9 °C on the 25th, followed by Applethorpe with 12.3 °C on the 26th, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 13.0 °C on the 25th, followed by Tambo Post Office with 13.0 °C on the 25th.

Some sites had their coldest May day (lowest maximum temperature) on record. Some sites had their lowest May mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years.

Minimum temperature

The Queensland area averaged minimum temperature (see notes section) was -1.41 °C below the long-term average of 13.6 °C (1961-1990). 

The coldest night was at Oakey Aero with -3.2 °C on the 15th, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with -3.0 °C on the 15th, followed by Warwick with -3.0 °C on the 15th, followed by Roma Airport with -2.9 °C on the 16th.

The coolest nights on average were at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 3.3 °C, followed by Applethorpe with 3.9 °C, followed by Roma Airport with 4.2 °C.

The warmest nights on average were at Coconut Island with 25.4 °C, followed by Horn Island with 24.6 °C, followed by Willis Island with 24.6 °C, followed by Cape Flattery with 23.5 °C.

The warmest night was at Horn Island with 27.3 °C on the 1st, followed by Coconut Island with 26.9 °C on the 1st, followed by Coconut Island with 26.6 °C on the 7th, followed by Coconut Island with 26.6 °C on the 9th.

Some sites had their lowest May temperature on record. Some sites had their lowest May mean daily minimum temperature for at least 20 years.

Wind

The strongest wind gust was at Double Island Point Lighthouse with 94 km/h on the 28th, followed by Double Island Point Lighthouse with 89 km/h on the 29th, followed by Middle Percy Island with 87 km/h on the 25th.
