Queensland in June 2012: Wet, cool month

  • Approximately 60% of the state (by area) recorded above average rainfall (around 6% below average, mainly in the far-north and north-west)
  • There were a total of  3 daily rainfall records and 4 overall June rainfall records broken
  • Around 67% of the state recorded below average maximum temperatures (around 2% above average, in the far-north)
  • Below average minimum temperatures were recorded for 62% of the state with around 11% above average in the south-east
  • There were 2 daily minimum temperture records broken

Rainfall

The Queensland area averaged rainfall was 33 mm (highest since 2007)

The wettest overall was Tomewin - Tallowood with 338.4 mm, followed by Lower Springbrook Alert with 337.2 mm, followed by Noosaville with 293.0 mm.

Some sites had their highest total June rainfall on record. Some sites had their highest total June rainfall for at least 20 years. Some sites had their lowest total June rainfall on record.

The wettest single day was at Woodgate Store with 128.2 mm on the 3rd, followed by Bundaberg Aero with 118.6 mm on the 3rd, followed by Sunshine Coast Airport with 114.4 mm on the 3rd.

Some sites had their highest June daily rainfall on record.

Weekly rainfall summary 

Up to 5th: A surface trough developed in central Queensland. Falls above 100 mm were recorded near Cairns and along the southeast coast and scattered areas in inland Queensland. Falls of between 25 and 100 mm were recorded across much of eastern and central Queensland. Falls of between 5 and 25 mm were recorded in most of the remaining areas of Queensland, excluding the Cape York Peninsula;
6th to 12th: A surface trough and strong low pressure system off the coast of southeast Queensland brought rain and severe weather from the 10th, recording falls of between 5 and 100 mm;
13th to 19th: Most of Queensland recorded little to no rainfall at all during the week;
20th to 26th:  Rain was mostly recorded in eastern Queensland with falls above 25 mm between Townsville and Fraser Island. Moist easterly airflow triggered rain in parts of southeast Queensland (north of Fraser Island) at the end of the week. Western Queensland recorded little to no rainfall at all during the week.

Temperature

The Queensland area averaged mean temperature (see notes section) was -0.86 °C below the long-term average of 16.7 °C (1961-1990).

The warmest on average was Coconut Island with 27.0 °C, followed by Horn Island with 26.1 °C, followed by Scherger RAAF with 24.9 °C, followed by Weipa Aero with 24.9 °C.

The coolest on average was Applethorpe with 9.0 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 9.2 °C, followed by Warwick with 11.3 °C.

Maximum temperature

The Queensland area averaged maximum temperature (see notes section) was -0.81 °C below the long-term average of 23.3 °C (1961-1990).

The hottest day was at Scherger RAAF with 32.9 °C on the 30th, followed by Weipa Aero with 32.8 °C on the 27th, followed by Weipa Aero with 32.5 °C on the 26th, followed by Scherger RAAF with 32.5 °C on the 27th.

The warmest days on average were at Scherger RAAF with 30.9 °C, followed by Weipa Aero with 30.5 °C, followed by Musgrave with 30.3 °C.

The coolest days on average were at Applethorpe with 14.3 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 15.1 °C, followed by Toowoomba Airport with 16.0 °C.

The coldest day was at Applethorpe with 7.7 °C on the 5th, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 9.0 °C on the 5th, followed by Applethorpe with 9.9 °C on the 26th.

Minimum temperature

The Queensland area averaged minimum temperature (see notes section) was -0.91 °C below the long-term average of 10.0 °C (1961-1990). 

The coldest night was at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with -3.5 °C on the 19th, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with -3.5 °C on the 20th, followed by Warwick with -3.5 °C on the 20th, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with -3.5 °C on the 24th, followed by Roma Airport with -3.4 °C on the 24th, followed by Oakey Aero with -3.3 °C on the 20th, followed by Applethorpe with -3.3 °C on the 24th.

The coolest nights on average were at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 3.3 °C, followed by Urandangi with 3.5 °C, followed by Applethorpe with 3.6 °C.

The warmest nights on average were at Coconut Island with 24.4 °C, followed by Horn Island with 23.0 °C, followed by Willis Island with 22.8 °C.

The warmest night was at Coconut Island with 26.0 °C on the 1st, followed by Coconut Island with 25.7 °C on the 5th, followed by Coconut Island with 25.6 °C on the 2nd.

Some sites had their lowest June mean daily minimum temperature on record. Some sites had their lowest June mean daily minimum temperature for at least 20 years.

Wind

The strongest wind gust was at Double Island Point Lighthouse with 98 km/h on the 28th, followed by Cape Moreton Lighthouse with 94 km/h on the 11th, followed by Cape Moreton Lighthouse with 94 km/h on the 28th, followed by Double Island Point Lighthouse with 91 km/h on the 27th.

Other phenomena

Sleet was reported at some locations on the 5th (such as at Eukey) and an East Coast Low formed off south-east Qld during the 11-12th

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 2 July 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 9 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The temperature anomalies are the differences to the respective 1961-1990 averages.

Please note that the rainfall data from telemetry gauges (those with ALERT, AL or TM in their names) may be from non-Bureau owned stations and includes real-time operational data from automated systems and has not been checked.
