Queensland in September 2012: Warm days, average nights, average rainfall

• Around 80% of the state had above average maximum temperatures (no where recorded below average and most northern and central districts were average)
• Approximately 75% of the state recorded average minimum temperatures 
• About 60% of the state recorded average rainfall (above average in a few north and north-west districts)
• There were 3 temperature records, potentially 6 low rainfall records and at least one dry spell record broken (ending in September)

Rainfall

The Queensland area averaged rainfall for September was 6.8 mm (the lowest since 2009)

The wettest overall was Kareeya with 83.0 mm, followed by Mt Sophia with 79.0 mm, followed by Marco Street Alert with 67.0 mm.

Some sites had their lowest total September rainfall on record. Some sites had their lowest total September rainfall for at least 20 years.

The wettest single day was at Marengo with 53.0 mm on the 17th, followed by Middle Percy Island with 48.6 mm on the 18th, followed by Theodore with 43.0 mm on the 25th.

Weekly rainfall summary:
Up to 4th: a strong high pressure ridge resulted in little or no rainfall across most of Australia. However, falls exceeded 25 mm in parts of the North Tropical Coast. Falls of between 5 and 25 mm were recorded in inland parts of Brisbane and Mackay;
5th to 11th: a strong high pressure ridge resulted in little or no rainfall across most of Australia. Falls of between 5 and 25 mm were recorded surrounding Cairns;
12th to 18th:  a strong high pressure ridge resulted in little or no rainfall across most of Australia. Thunderstorms produced rain in parts of central and southeast Queensland at the end of the week. Isolated heavy falls greater than 25 mm were recorded in the eastern parts of Queensland. Falls of between 5 and 25 mm were recorded surrounding the areas of higher falls;
19th to 25th: a strong high pressure ridge resulted in little or no rainfall across most of Australia. Thunderstorms produced rain in southeast Queensland at the end of the week with isolated heavy falls greater than 25 mm.

Coolangatta set a new record of 54 days without rain (28 July - 19 September, 2012) since data collection began in December 1982
Brisbane Airport equalled its previous record of 55 days without rain (25 July - 17 September, 1991), between 20 July - 12 September, 2012

Temperature

The Queensland area averaged mean temperature (see notes section) was 0.79 °C above the long-term average of 21.1 °C (1961-1990).

The warmest on average was Coconut Island with 27.2 °C, followed by Horn Island with 27.1 °C, followed by Normanton Airport with 27.1 °C, followed by Weipa Aero with 27.1 °C, followed by Croydon Township with 27.0 °C.

The coolest on average was Applethorpe with 12.8 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 13.2 °C, followed by Warwick with 14.8 °C.

Maximum temperature

The Queensland area averaged maximum temperature (see notes section) was 1.44 °C above the long-term average of 28.7 °C (1961-1990).

The hottest day was at Bedourie Police Station with 41.6 °C on the 20th, followed by Urandangi Aerodrome with 41.5 °C on the 21st, followed by Urandangi Aerodrome with 41.4 °C on the 22nd.

The warmest days on average were at Century Mine with 35.5 °C, followed by Kowanyama Airport with 35.0 °C, followed by Scherger RAAF with 34.6 °C, followed by Weipa Aero with 34.6 °C.

The coolest days on average were at Applethorpe with 21.0 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 21.8 °C, followed by Cape Moreton Lighthouse with 22.2 °C.

The coldest day was at Applethorpe with 14.7 °C on the 1st, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 15.5 °C on the 1st, followed by Toowoomba Airport with 16.6 °C on the 1st.

Some sites had their highest September temperature on record.

Minimum temperature

The Queensland area averaged minimum temperature (see notes section) was 0.14 °C above the long-term average of 13.6 °C (1961-1990).

The coldest night was at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with -4.0 °C on the 2nd, followed by Applethorpe with -3.8 °C on the 2nd, followed by Roma Airport with -3.5 °C on the 3rd.

The coolest nights on average were at Applethorpe with 4.5 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 4.5 °C, followed by Warwick with 5.4 °C, followed by Oakey Aero with 5.6 °C.

The warmest nights on average were at Coconut Island with 24.2 °C, followed by Horn Island with 23.9 °C, followed by Willis Island with 23.2 °C.

The warmest night was at Horn Island with 25.2 °C on the 12th, followed by The Monument Airport with 25.1 °C on the 21st, followed by Sweers Island with 25.1 °C on the 25th, followed by Horn Island with 25.1 °C on the 28th, followed by Coconut Island with 25.0 °C on the 12th, followed by Croydon Township with 25.0 °C on the 25th.

Some sites had their lowest September temperature on record.

Wind

The strongest wind gust was at Kingaroy Airport with 87 km/h on the 21st, followed by Oakey Aero with 87 km/h on the 21st, followed by Dalby Airport with 85 km/h on the 21st, followed by Rockhampton Aero with 83 km/h on the 24th.
