Rainfall

Above average rainfall was only recorded over the southeast quarter of Queensland, the far tip of Cape York Peninsula, and a very small area in the far southwest. However, despite some high weekly rainfall totals at some stations, it was drier than usual across most of the state, particularly in over the interior, with nearly 70% of Queensland experiencing below average rainfall.

From the start of the month to 4 June 2013, onshore flow generated rain across the east Queensland coast. Brisbane Botanical Gardens (Mt Coot-tha) recorded a 4 day total of 37.8 mm.

For the week ending 11 June 2013 rain was generally patchy with onshore flow producing locally heavy rain in parts of southeast Queensland, and the Cairns region. Caloundra recorded 240 mm for the week.

For the week ending 18 June 2013 rain was recorded over the southeast half of the state, and the very tip of Cape York Peninsula. A complex East Coast Low formed over the Tasman Sea early in the week with an associated low pressure trough extending along the east coast. The highest weekly totals were recorded at Point Lookout with 79.2 mm, and in the far north at Coconut Island with 75.8 mm.

For the week ending 25 June 2013 rain was widespread across southeast Queensland. An extensive middle level cloudband over the tropical north, central Australia and much of Queensland brought mainly light rainfall to southeastern Queensland. The highest weekly total was at Cape Moreton with 52.6mm.

From the 26th to the end of the month, a surface trough off southern Queensland with an embedded low pressure system caused some heavy rainfall over the southeast of the state. Coolangatta recorded 121.6 mm in the 4 days.

The wettest overall was recorded at stations in the southeast coastal district, with Caloundra Airport receiving 293.2 mm, followed by Corbould Pk Racecourse recording 229 mm, and then Coolangatta with 225.2 mm.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 1 July 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 9 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
