  • Friday, 3 January 2014 was Queensland's hottest day on record (in area averaged terms)
  • Two main heatwaves:
    • late December to 4 January, then after excess heat circulated counter-clockwise around Australia,
    • a second returned the week of 20 January (see Special Climate Statement 47), and
  • A number of places with record number of days above 40 C
  • Richmond had four days above or equal to 44 C

  • Widespread rainfall occurred on 23 January in the south east with some locally heavy falls leading to flash flooding
  • A monsoon low triggered a tropical cyclone watch in the Coral Sea on 28 January
  • Tropical cyclone Dylan was named at 1pm on the 30th

Rainfall: Tropical cyclone Dylan

Averaged across Queensland, January 2014's rainfall of  76.52 mm was 39.6% below the long term mean of 126.59 mm.

Tropical cyclone Dylan formed as a low off the Queensland coast and developed into a tropical cyclone during 30 January, and was officially named tropical cyclone Dylan at 1pm on Thursday 30th January. Tropical cyclone Dylan became increasingly organised during the 30th, and intensified to category 2 before making  landfall near Hideaway Bay (east of Bowen) around 3:30am on the morning of the 31st. Tropical cyclone Dylan weakened to a tropical low and continued to move inland. The heaviest 24 hour rainfall occurred between Bowen and St Lawrence with falls of 100 to 200 mm across the Pioneer River Catchment, 100 to 200 mm across the upper tributaries of the Connors/Isaac catchment and 100 to 200 mm across the Proserpine catchment. An isolated minor flood occurred on the 31st at Finch Hatton in the Pioneer River and also at Mackay between Hospital Bridge and Forgan Bridge on the high tide. Flood warnings continued into February for Coastal Rivers Central (Mackay to Gladstone), the Connors/Isaac in the Fitzroy catchment and Western Rivers.

Rainfall associated with ex-tropical cyclone Dylan brought relief to some parts of the Queensland interior. Despite some locally heavy falls, there were large parts of the west that recorded below average rainfall for the month, particularly in the west. The southern interior, parts of the central interior, Capricornia Coast and Central Coast recorded average rainfall.  The far northern tip of the Peninsula recorded well above average, with some areas recording the highest total January rainfall for at least 20 years.

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 3 February 2014. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 9 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
