Queensland in February 2016: Much drier and warmer than usual in the north

Rainfall during February was below the average across Queensland.  It was particularly drier than usual in the north of the State. Temperatures were much warmer than usual across most of the State, especially in the north.

  • Very dry in the north, including the interior and Gulf Country
  • Below average rainfall in parts of southern Queensland
  • Sixth-warmest mean temperature on record for Queensland
  • Seventh-warmest daytime temperatures for the State
  • Equal sixth-warmest overnight temperatures for the State

Rainfall was well below average across northern Queensland during February, with some areas of record low rainfall. Above average rainfall was reported in parts of central Queensland, and pockets of the west and far southwest. Remaining areas received near-average falls.

There were several rainfall events during the month. A very moist, warm and unstable tropical airmass extended over much of Queensland at the start of the month, with a slow-moving surface trough located through the interior. Moderate falls were recorded in central, western and southern Queensland, with heavy falls reported in some areas in central Queensland, and the Capricornia coast. On the 9th, a weak surface trough located offshore from the central coast moved northwards, with thunderstorm and shower activity forming in the vicinity of the trough and in northern Queensland. Severe thunderstorms developed on the evening of the 8th, producing very heavy rainfall in Townsville, with 91 mm recorded in 30 minutes at Aplin Weir. The intense rainfall continued across the Townsville area into the evening.  Another slow-moving surface trough extended over far north Queensland, with moderate rain falling between the 10th and 13th about the Cape York Peninsula. From the 17th, a surface trough stretched from the northwest to the southeastern interior, triggering thunderstorms and showers. Moderate falls were recorded in the southeastern quarter of the State on the 19th and 20th, with lighter falls recorded in isolated parts of the Gulf Country, northern interior and central inland parts.

Mean maximum temperatures were above average across most of the State during February, and several locations had their highest February mean daily maximum temperature on record. Parts of the southern interior stretching up to inland central Queensland had near-average daytime temperatures for the month.

Mean minimum temperatures followed a similar pattern, with northern Queensland having well above average overnight temperatures overall. Some areas in the Cape York Peninsula and an area of the central coast around Townsville and adjacent inland districts had record warm nights. Parts of the central west, southern interior and far western Queensland recorded near-average overnight temperatures.

Tropical cyclone Tatiana was the first cyclone in the eastern region for the 2015-16 season. The system was named on the afternoon of 11 February, and remained well offshore throughout its lifetime.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 March 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
