Mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures for October were below the long-term average. Rainfall was below average in the southeast, and in parts of central and northern Queensland, while the Gulf Country recorded above average rainfall. Remaining parts received near-average rainfall for October.

Dry in some parts; wet about the Gulf Country

  • Below average rainfall was recorded in southeastern, central and northern parts
  • October is the first month since April with below-average State rainfall
  • Rainfall was above average in parts of the Gulf Country, Cape York Peninsula and southwest

  • Isolated storms produced moderate falls in the central and north tropical coasts on 13th and 14th, with Hawkins Creek recording its highest October daily rainfall on record
  • Squally thunderstorms in the eastern Darling Downs on the 18th produced moderate falls in the southeast
  • A surface and upper-level trough generated moderate falls in the Gulf Country, and in central and southeastern parts on 22nd and 23rd

Very cool days overall; but some warm days throughout the month

  • Daytime temperatures were much cooler than usual in the central and western districts; but warm in the north
  • Urandangi reached 43.8 °C on the 30th, beating the previous record of 43.7 °C set on 29 October 2005
  • A number of cold days in the first week and second part of the month, as a result of cool and dry southerly winds
  • Warmer days in southern parts from the 7th to the 10th, and in western parts of the State on the 21st
  • Thick cloud cover associated with a rainband on the 23rd resulted in a few sites reporting their coldest October day (lowest maximum temperature) or the lowest for several decades

Notes

The Monthly climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Tuesday 1 November 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
