Queensland in July 2020: Above average rainfall in the north and east coast

Rainfall was above average in the north, along parts of the east coast, and in areas of western Queensland. Both mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures were above average for the state as a whole.

Wetter than usual in the north and parts of the east coast

  • Rainfall was above average in the northern interior, along the north tropical, central and southeast coasts, and parts of western and southern inland Queensland
  • Below average rainfall was recorded in a band in the northwest, central interior and southeast inland districts
  • Showers and storms developed over western Queensland on the 10th, and produced isolated moderate falls in the area
  • Moist onshore flow brought showers and light falls to the southeast coast between the 8th and 12th
  • A surface trough combined with an upper level trough over inland Queensland on the 22nd, and produced widespread moderate falls from the Burdekin to Wide Bay coasts.
  • On the 26th, a trough and low pressure system developed along the southeast Queensland coast, and brought moist south-easterly flow and moderate falls to the southeast coast. Falls in excess of 100 mm were recorded around the Gold Coast, and some sites had their highest July daily rainfall on record
  • A few sites had their highest total July rainfall for at least 20 years

Warm days overall across most of the state

  • In terms of mean temperature, Queensland as a whole was 1.20 °C above average
  • Queensland's mean maximum temperature was 1.14 °C above the long-term average and the mean minimum temperature was 1.26 °C above the long-term average
  • Mean maximum temperatures were above average across most of the state, except in the far southwest, and from the north tropical to central coast and adjacent inland districts
  • Maximum temperatures were above average across most of the state away from the east coast at the start of the month
  • Daytime temperatures were cooler than average during periods of rain, in particular, across southern and western districts for several days from the 11th, and in eastern Queensland for the 21st to 23rd
  • Mean minimum temperatures were above average around the Gulf Country and western Cape York Peninsula, and in the southeast, but close to average elsewhere
  • There were some cool nights, and frosts over southern inland districts during the month, including from the 5th to 7th and around the 17th and 18th
  • For the year-to-date (January to July), Queensland's mean maximum temperature and mean minimum temperature are both more than a degree above average

Hazardous surf

  • A low pressure system off the New South Wales coast generated strong winds and hazardous surf conditions on the 26th

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Monday 3 August 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
