Queensland in October 2020: above average rainfall in parts; widespread storms in the south-east

Rainfall was above average in the west, the northern interior, central west to Capricornia Coast, and areas in the south, Darling Downs and south-east coast. Thunderstorms brought moderate falls to the central to south-east districts in the last part of the month.

Mean maximum temperatures were above average in the north and east, extending into the southern interior. Mean minimum temperatures were above average across most of the state, but close to average in the south-west and along parts of the east coast.

Thunderstorms produced heavy rain at the end of the month

  • Rainfall was above average in the northern interior, west, and parts of central west to the Capricornia Coast, and pockets in the south, Darling Downs and south-east coast.
  • Below average rainfall was reported across parts of the northern Maranoa and Warrego, but close to average elsewhere in the state.
  • Thunderstorms developed over the central west on the 11th along a surface trough extending from north-west to south-east Queensland. The trough lingered for several days, with storms from the central west to the southern Darling Downs, and in the Gulf Country and north-west producing moderate falls from the 12th to the 14th.
  • A cold front and trough moved through southern Queensland, producing moderate falls in southern and south-east parts on the 19th.
  • A series of surface troughs swept across the state from the 21st to the 24th, with a deep trough stalling over eastern Queensland. Widespread thunderstorms and moderate to locally heavy falls were reported across western, the northern to southern interior, and south-east Queensland.
  • Widespread thunderstorms affected Brisbane on the 24th and 25th, then the 27th and 28th, bringing heavy rainfall to some sites, strong wind gusts and hail.
  • Severe thunderstorms brought moderate to locally heavy falls to parts of the south-east on the 31st.

Warmer than average days in the north; warm nights across most of the state

  • In terms of mean temperature, Queensland as a whole was 1.14 °C above average.
  • Queensland's mean maximum temperature was 1.00 °C above the long-term average and the ninth-warmest on record; the mean minimum temperature was 1.28 °C above the long-term average.
  • Mean maximum temperatures were above average in the north and east, extending into the southern interior.
  • Mean minimum temperatures were above average across most of the state, but close to average in the south-west and along parts of the east coast.
  • For the year-to-date (January to October), Queensland's mean maximum temperature and mean minimum temperature were both more than a degree warmer than average.

Severe thunderstorms

  • Widespread thunderstorms affected central and south-east Queensland between the 24th and 29th. Thunderstorms affected Brisbane on the 24th and 25th, then the 27th and 28th, bringing heavy rainfall to some sites, flash-flooding, and strong wind gusts.
  • Thunderstorms produced large hail, with reports up to 6 cm hail in diameter south of Gayndah, fallen power lines in the Caboolture area, and localised flash-flooding on the 28th.
  • Severe thunderstorms impacted much of south-east Queensland on afternoon of the 31st. The main impacts were giant hail up to 14 cm in diamter along a path from Amberley to the northern suburbs of Logan, giant hail up to 7 cm in the Gympie area, and wind damage from Redcliffe to Kingston with gusts over 100 km/h recorded around Moreton Bay.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 2 pm on Sunday 1 November 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
