Remote Islands and Antarctica in July 2017

Australia's Indian Ocean islands

  • Daytime temperatures were a little below average on Christmas and the Cocos (Keeling) islands, with several cooler than usual days in the second half of the month
  • Overnight temperatures were a little above average at both Christmas and the Cocos (Keeling) islands, with some mild mornings at the start of the month countered by cooler temperatures in the final two weeks
  • Cocos Island Airport had 148.4 mm of rain, about two-thirds of the July average, with most of that falling in the first five days
  • Rainfall on Christmas Island was 46.4 mm, about half the July average

Australia's Pacific Ocean islands

  • Daytime temperatures were above average on both Lord Howe and Norfolk islands, despite several cool days
  • Overnight temperatures were below average overall on both Lord Howe and Norfolk islands, with some chilly mornings, especially in the second half of the month
  • Lord Howe Island had 80.4 mm of rain overall; much less rain than usual for July despite having three days with at least 10 mm
  • Norfolk Island's rainfall of 118.4 mm was close to average, with especially wet totals reported on the 1st, 20th and 30th

Australia's Antarctic and sub-Antarctic territories

  • Temperatures at Mawson and Davis were above average overall, with a cold run up to the 11th replaced by much warmer than average weather for the rest of the month
  • Temperatures were almost four degrees below the July average at Casey, with very cold weather for almost the entire month
  • Macquarie Island was a little cooler than average, with mostly above-average temperatures balanced against a spell of very cold weather around the 25th
  • The automated rain gauge on Macquarie Island reported 55.2 mm of precipitation for the month, but this was affected by very low temperatures; manual readings show a total of 77.4 mm

Most values are the precipitation in the 24 hours to 9 am on the day indicated. Days marked with → are part of a longer accumulation, which is shown on the final day.
Values over 100 mm have been rounded to the nearest whole millimetre.
Days marked with - have a precipitation report of zero; days left blank have no precipitation report (which often indicates no precipitation fell).

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Remote Islands and Antarctica using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 1 pm on Tuesday 1 August 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the precipitation is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average precipitation.

Precipitation values from Casey and Davis should be used with caution.

The Rank indicates how precipitation this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low precipitation is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much precipitation has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
