South Australia in September 2007
Very dry and warm September over much of the State.

Summary

September rainfall was below to very much below average over all of the state. Temperatures were significantly above average, particularly for maximum temperatures, with some stations reaching record September mean maximum temperatures.

Rainfall

Pastoral Districts

Rainfall over the Pastoral Districts was very much below average. Many locations in the North West and Far North districts recorded no rainfall and across the district these totals placed them in the lowest 10 to 20 percent of all September monthly rainfall reports. The highest total was 7 mm at Nonning. Falls were slightly higher in the North East district but still only around 5 mm, with the highest being 7 mm at Gluepot.

Agricultural Districts

Rainfall totals over the Agricultural districts were generally below to very much below average. Totals were generally 20−30 mm in the southern Agricultural districts, with totals of 10−20 mm in the Western Agricultural district, the Riverland and the Murray Mallee. The Mount Lofty Ranges and the Lower South East generally recorded totals of 40 to 50 mm. The highest total was 111 mm at Mount Lofty.

Some sites had their lowest total September rainfall on record.

Temperature

Maximum

Maximum temperatures were generally 2 to 3°C above average across the state with many stations recording their highest September mean maximum temperatures. These included Adelaide Airport, Warooka, Elliston and Murray Bridge PO.

Temperatures in the Pastoral Districts ranged from 23.0°C at Yunta in the Northeast district to 28.6°C at Oodnadatta in the Far North district. The highest temperature recorded in the Pastoral districts was 40.7°C at Oodnadatta Airport on the 25th, which was a new record for that station, eclipsing the previous record of 40.5°C from September 1980.

Maximum temperatures over the agricultural Districts ranged from 16.0°C at Parawa in the Mount Lofty Ranges to 25.8°C at Port Augusta in the Western Agricultural district, which also had the warmest temperature in the agricultural districts of 36.6°C on the 26th.

Minimum

Minimum temperatures were generally about 0.5 to 1°C above normal over the state.

Mean minimum temperatures in the Pastoral districts ranged from 6.1°C at Gluepot in the North East district to 13.1°C at Marree in the Far North district. The lowest temperature recorded in the Pastoral districts was −2.5°C at Yunta on the 5th.

Mean minimum temperatures in the agricultural districts ranged from 4.4°C at Yongala in the Upper North to 11.2°C at Streaky Bay. The lowest temperature recorded in the Agricultural districts for was −3.1°C at Murray Bridge on the 5th. Ceduna has its lowest September minimum on record on the 1st with −1.2°C.

Significant Weather

Severe winds

The passage of a front on Sunday, 16 September resulted in a severe gust to 91 km/h at Lameroo and gale force winds at Yunta. No significant damage has been reported.

Wednesday, 19 September saw the passage of another front, which resulted in severe wind gusts at Edithburgh, Woomera and Naracoorte, and gale force winds at Hindmarsh Island. No significant damage has been reported.

A vigorous post-frontal air-stream in the early hours of Wednesday 26 September caused wind gusts to 100 km/h and gale force winds at Marree. No significant damage has been reported.

A front moved across South Australia in the afternoon and evening of Thursday 27 September, which produced severe wind gusts at Port Lincoln, Mount Crawford, and Hindmarsh Island. Gale force winds were observed at Port Lincoln and Mount Crawford.

Following the front of the previous day, a ridge of high pressure moved quickly over the Bight in the morning of Friday 28 September and produced a strong and gusty airstream with severe gusts at Robe, Cape Jaffa, Mount Gambier and Cape Willoughby (WSW direction so thought to be not from funnelling). No significant damage has been reported.

The Fraction of normal shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
