South Australia in 1 January to 31 January 2008
A hot start to 2008!!

Summary

Rainfall was generally below average across South Australia with some exceptions from thunderstorm activity, mainly in eastern South Australia. The start of the month saw widespread heat-wave conditions through the south of the state, and temperatures remained significantly above average for the month, particularly during the day, despite temperatures closer to average for the remainder of the month.

While nationally it was the warmest January in the area averaged records going back to 1950, it was the seventh warmest for South Australia.

Rainfall

Pastoral Districts

Rainfall over the Pastoral Districts during January was generally below average to very much below average, though some locations were above average from isolated thunderstorm activity.

Rainfall totals were generally less than 5 mm with many locations receiving no rainfall for the month.

The highest rainfall total for January in the Pastoral Districts was 18.0 mm at Tarcoola (Lake Everard) in the North West District.

Agricultural Districts

Rainfall totals over the Agricultural Districts were generally below average, though some locations in the eastern districts and Mount Lofty Ranges were above average due to thunderstorms during the month.

Rainfall totals were typically less than 5 mm, though the Mt Lofty ranges, the South East and the Murray Mallee saw totals more consistently in the 10−15 mm range.

The highest January rainfall reported in the Agricultural Districts was 45.6 mm at Willunga in the Mt Lofty Ranges.

Some sites had their lowest total 1 January to 31 January rainfall on record.

Temperature

Maximum

Mean maximum temperatures were generally 2 to 4°C above average in the Pastoral Districts and 1 to 2°C above average in the agricultural districts.

Mean maximum temperatures across the Pastoral Districts ranged from 34.0°C at Gluepot in the Northeast Pastoral district to 40.9°C at Marree Comparison in the Far North Pastoral district.

Port August Aerodrome recorded the highest maximum with 45.4°C on the 10th.

Mean maximum temperatures across the Agricultural Districts ranged from 21.0°C at Cape Willoughby on Kangaroo Island, to 36.7°C at Hawker in the Upper North district.

Wudinna recorded the highest maximum across the agricultural areas with 44.5°C on the 10th.

Minimum

Mean minimum temperatures were generally 1 to 2°C above average over the state.

Mean minimum temperatures in the Pastoral districts ranged from 16.1°C at Gluepot in the Northeast district to 25.6°C at Moomba Aerodrome in the Far North district.

The lowest recorded minimum temperature in the Pastoral districts was 10.5°C at Marree Comparison in the Far North district on the 18th.

Across the Agricultural areas mean minimum temperatures ranged from 11.4°C at Naracoorte Aerodrome in the Lower South East district to 20.0°C at Port Augusta Aerodrome.

The lowest recorded minimum temperature in the Agricultural districts was 4.0°C at Naracoorte Aerodrome in the Lower South East district on the 14th.
