Temperature

Both maximum and minimum temperatures were well above average across the Adelaide region through September 2013 with some sites having their highest September mean daily maximum temperature on record and highest September mean daily minimum temperature on record. The first few days of the month saw very much above average temperatures, with Adelaide (Kent Town) reporting four consecutive days with maximum temperatures equal or greater than 28.0 °C. This resulted in the warmest start on record to September, and spring, for Adelaide. Warm conditions continued through the month with Kent Town observing only 8 days that were below the long-term average of 19.1 °C and 11 days greater than 25.0°C when typically there would be about 3 to 4 days.

Adelaide Kent Town observed the warmest day for any location across the region on the 3rd with a maximum of 29.1 °C, which was Adelaide’s warmest September day in 2 years. The warmest days on average were at Adelaide (Kent Town) and Parafield Airpport, both with a monthly average of 22.3 °C, resulting in the warmest September days on record for these lcoations. Adelaide’s previous warmest September days was observed in 1944, with a monthly average of 21.4 °C.

The coldest day of the month for any location in the Adelaide and Hills region was reported at Mount Lofty on the 10th when the maximum reached 9.2 °C; The coolest days on average for the month were at Mount Lofty with a September average maximum temperature of 16.3 °C.

Mean minimum temperatures were also above average across the Adelaide Plains and Hills this September, with the minimum temperature at Adelaide (Kent Town) being 12.7°C, 3.0 °C above the long term September average, resulting in Adelaide’s warmest September nights on record.

The coldest night during September 2013 in the Adelaide and Hills area was 4.7 °C observed at Mount Lofty on the 26th. The coolest nights on average were recorded at Mount Lofty with 9.3 °C. The warmest night was 19.6°C at Noarlunga on the 4th. Noarlunga also recorded the warmest nights overall with a monthly average of 13.0 °C .

Rainfall

The September 2013 rainfall total at Adelaide (Kent Town) was 42.6 mm received on 12 rain days. This is below the long-term average of 59.2 mm typically received on about 14 rain days; the long-term median rainfall for September at Adelaide (Kent Town) is 56.4 mm. By comparison, during September 2012, just 21.8 mm was recorded at Adelaide (Kent Town).

The wettest days for the Adelaide and Hills regions occurred during the middle of September, with nearly half of the monthly total being recorded in the 24 hours to 9am on the 13th. This occurred when a trough of low pressure moved across western parts of South Australia on the 12th. A band of middle level cloud near and east of the trough thickened as it moved eastwards, producing isolated shower and thunderstorm activity across the Adelaide region. A low pressure system and associated troughs south of the Great Australia Bight brought continued shower and thunderstorm activity through to the 20th.

Monthly rainfall totals across the region typically ranged from 40 to 50mm on the Adelaide plains, with higher totals in the 70 to 100 mm range throughout the Hills. The wettest location for the month was at Uraidla where 122.6mm was observed. Mount Lofty reported the wettest day through out the month with 26.4 mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 13th.

(Note that the Adelaide official climate rainfall record is taken from the manually observed 203mm rain gauge at the Kent Town site in Adelaide. These figures may differ from totals on some Bureau of Meteorology web pages as these may be from automatic tipping bucket rain gauge readings).

Notes

A Monthly Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Adelaide Metro & Hills using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Tuesday 1 October 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
